I am surprised I haven't seen at least a little more about this album. These are very good re-workings. To the extent this one diverges from the original, to my ears it's to go for more folkloric rhythms, which works well. The only weakness is that Kidjo sometimes sticks too closely, in general, to Celia's mannerisms. But, damn, she has the voice to pull it off!
I'd be lying if I said I don't like some salsa romantica. I didn't recognize this at first, when I heard it recently, until I came to the ridiculously catchy chorus.
