Believe it or not I had a heated discussion about this once.
I always thought Pop Music stood for Popular Music.

Simple verse/ chorus/ verse layout.

With a catchy melody and hook.

A common theme that many people can relate to.

I usually think upbeat and short and consumable around 2:00 minutes.

Like the beatles "Can't Buy Me Love"

I think sunny, bright and jangly.

There can be pop songs that no one hears.

And there can be pop songs like Celene Dion, but would be more aptly labeled under "Adult Contemporary"

Just because it's popular doesn't make it pop.

by definition I always thought it was just popular music....

but when people think of pop it's the Madonna-esque artist who get lumped into that category, regardless of whether they're actually popular or not.

Does bubblegum fall into the pop music category? If so, loved these back in the day. Remember when?
