Unaware of Paul Westerberg turning 50. The Mats are one of the best. PW is a great songwriter. I know a band that aside from playing originals, traditional country, and blues covers will only cover the Replacements.
Love love love the Mats!!! I'm still pissed at my mom making me take the last Metro North train home from NYC and not let me stay and see the Mats at the Old Ritz because they weren't going to go on until 11.30 pm....it was 1985 and I was just 15....Then they broke up....damnit mom!
I mostly remember being on a bus in '86 or '87 from Denver back to Boulder, and meeting a girl who was on her way to see them at the auditorium. It was a perfect venue. Not tiny but intimate enough to think, I'm in the same room as the Replacements! Man, I wanted to go to. I couldn't afford it, and I felt embarrassed to say that to her. Little did I know then it was my last opportunity to see them live at their best.
