Hi, we recently sold our home in NY. Closing is going to be in late March. We have owned a home in Myrtle Beach since 2009 and want to make it our permanent residence. My husband will still be working in NY for an unspecified time. He will either retire or get laid off in the next couple of years. What does he put on his W4 as his address? We are going to make our address in Myrtle Beach permanent when we finally close on our house in NY. We have alot of questions? Can we go ahead and make SC our permanent residence before we close on our house in NY? What about auto insurance? My husband is going to be renting in NY while he is working there. Is that ok? What all do we need to do to become residents? What do we need to bring to DMV? Will our house taxes on our house in MB be lowered once we move in since it will be our home address? Where do we go and what do we bring to have that done? Since he wil be working in NY we wll have to pay NY taxes, what about SC taxes? If anyone knowledgeable about these things have answers, please reply.
Cindy,
You stated you are moving permenantly to Myrtle Beach in the home that you already own there.
So that is your residence.
You will contact your local real estate taxing agency (where you pay your taxes now) for the form for perm residents, and you send it back to them with a copy of your drivers license. THey will adjust your taxes for you.
You will file your state and federal taxes at the address where you reside all year.
Many people travel all year long, both nationally and internationally and they have a perm home, so the fact that he is renting an apartment so that he can work there for now isn't unusal, he will use the home address in MB if that is his perm home.
(Think of it as cheaper than a hotel).
Congrats on the sale of your home, and I am sure you will like it in South Carolina!
Welcome!
What all do we need to do to become residents? What do we need to bring to DMV?
1) change your address with your auto insurance (if you are with a national company) or get a local policy if you do not have a national company
2) Pay the property tax on your vehicle/vehicles
3) Register your vehicle and get SC tags (must pay tax and change your address with your insurance first)
4) Get your drivers license transferred
Thank you so much for the info. Not to sound too ignorant, but when you talk about going to where I pay taxes now, you are talking about my home in SC, right? Do I need to bring anything to prove I am a resident like the deed, utility bills. So, the first thing I do is go to the tax office and then go to the DMV? Thank you so much for your help. Also, I don't have to wprry about filing for taxes in SC till 2012 since we are still in NY and were here in 2010.
One more dumb question. We are going to go on and move our stuff in two weeks. Around Feb. 28th. The house in NY is not going to close till end of March - first of April? Can we go on and make the home in MB our permanent residence before the NY house closes? Appreciate any help
Also,it is very important that we let the tax office know that we have permanently moved to Myrtle Beach because it will drop our property taxes considerably. Where is the prperty tax office?
You can make MB your permanent residence by moving here and getting your driver's license etc. changed. The property tax office for MB (Horry County) is in Conway and there is also a branch office on 21st St in MB.
We close sometime in eary March. We want to move our stuff down there this month(Feb). Can we go ahead and make the Myrtle Beach residence our permanent residence before we close? Also, where do we go to prove we own the home and it will be our permanent address to get our property tax lowered on the house? Thank You!!!
Cindy, the answers to your questions are all answered in the responses above. But, to reiterate...yes you can go ahead and make MB your permanent residence. You need to change the utility bills from SC to go to your MB address in your name (if they aren't already). You then need to take a utility bill (in your name addressed to MB) along with your car insurance (changed to SC with a SC address) to DMV and get a new drivers license. You need to go to the county tax office and pay the tax on your cars. You can also get your house changed to permanent residence at the same time. You need to get a new license plate for your cars at DMV. Also, if you changed your last name when you got married, you'll need a copy of your marriage license/certificate when you go to get your drivers license.
