How is the racism? Yea, I am from North, and have heard the junk about Sc and the south in general being racist. I tend to not believe what I hear which is why I am posting here asking how it really is. (I asked in a general sc forum but now I know where I am moving, murrels inlet)
Just a heads up. How bad is it, or is it even there at all?

I am from NJ and have a townhouse in Murrells Inlet. I expected to witness racism due to the history of the South. Not so. No racism that I have noticed.......
There are many people from NY and NJ living on the coast. The coast tends to be a liberal. I lived in Mt. Pleasant for ten years prior to taking a job in NYC. We are moving back but to Murrell's Inlet (once we find a house). My young son is African-American.

Say What??
Murrells Inlet is a pleasant place to live, but if you expect it to be trending left like Mt Pleasant, you will be disappointed. Horry and Georgetown counties are solidly conservative. The bulk of migration to the Grand Strand is retired, affluent, caucasian, and that demographic will not shift the status quo. On rare occasions, a renegade liberal shows up around here, but they are usually rounded up and deported.
The Greenville/Spartanburg area is generally considered the conservative ground zero of SC, but in both the 2012 presidential election and the last governor election, Horry County had a higher percentage of republican votes than either of those counties, with Horry in the top 5 republican counties, based on vote percentages. Our new House Representative to Congress falls into the far right category, among those still not sure of President Obama's citizenship.

Can you elaborate on what I asked? I could care less about political beliefs, to be honest.
When I lived in Mt. P, I was always told the coast was liberal. I lived in Mt. Pleasant for ten years. I also had the idea that a lot of people from the NE were relocating to the Myrtle Beach area. Therefore, I expected it to be more open to diversity. I may be wrong. :-( Yes, I know Greenville pretty well. I didn't realize that Greenville was less conservative than Horry County.
True. I have to get over my fear of the south. Kind of unavoidable now, lol. Moving in a month down there.
