recently moved to MB from MD and tomorrow we will be going to DMV to get SC drives lic. and register our cars.......any advise or suggestions to help this process go as smooth as possible would be appreciated. We are both over 65 if that means anything and bought a home in the Tuscany development off 501.

we came from MD as well . As long as you have all the docs you need , it is an easy process.

The web site lists everything you need

I agree with KavH...just use the DMV site to make sure you have all the documentation. And pay your car tax before you go to DMV...otherwise, they will just send you there before they will do anything.

Oh, and if you're married, you'll need a copy of your marriage license which for us took some doing since we had been married so long.

The DMV in Myrtle Beach is directly across from the County Offices where you can pay your car taxes. My wait at the DMV was about 1 hour. You wait in line to get a number and then you wait for your number to be called. When I finally got to the counter, I asked the clerk what was the best time to come. She said they were always busy, but if she had to be specific, Tuesday Morning seemed the lightest.

We always go to the DMV in Conway --seems less crowded but of course all the way on the other side of town so pick your poison. AND ---don't go the last week of the month when everyone is rushing to renew at the last minute

went and paid our " property tax" in Myrtle, went fine, then went across st. to get lic and registration. Line was out the door, so we made trip to Conway, if I knew it was going to be that far I would have gone to N. Myrtle. But Conway was fine, very little wait, DMV folks very helpful, our only problem is that we could not get our driving license because my wife and I only had copies of our birth certificates. So now we have to contact NJ to see if we can get originals sent to us. You would think if you've had a license in another state for years, a SS card, and military ID a copy of the birth cert. would be fine. Oh well, wait, and another trip to DMV when and if we can get the original birth cert's from NJ.

I think (if memory serves me correct) that your wife will also need your marriage certificate of her name change. You might want to check that before your next trip to the DMV.

It's a booger, usually more for the ladies, because if your name is different since birth, you must document all name changes. (which can be a bear if there have been several).

One shortcut: If she has a current US passport in her current name, that will bypass everything on the name issue...you'll still need Social Security card and proof of residence (pay special attention to that; it's a long list, but it must be an exact match on that list).

You can thank 9/11 rules for all the silliness now needed for licenses and ID's.

Not sure what your flexibility is time-wise, but now that school's in, mid-mornings Tuesday or Thursday are statistically the best times to get in and out quickly.
