Hi. We are a 46-52 yr old couple looking to relocate. We’ve visited Bluffton, SC and liked it. We liked the location to Savannah and Hilton Head. It’s definitely different than where we live now in terms of a ton of Gaye’s communities and only a few main roads with not alot of side roads (we are north of Pittsburgh). We want to be about 30 minutes or less from a beach. We’d like some restaurants and maybe live entertainment. Ive read about Murrells inlet and it appears to have what we may want in a new location. Can anyone compare it to Bluffton, SC at all? Housing looks to be fine price-wise but us there anywhere for apt rentals that are close - like 10-20 minutes? We’d be moving his mom by us snd she’d need a 2 bedroom nice apartment. It has to be nice and safe area. Just trying to compare a few areas…
We live in Murrells Inlet and we've only been to Bluffton once so my perspective comparing the two may not be entirely accurate but since no one else has responded to your post, I'll give it a shot.
My recollection of Bluffton is that is has a defined downtown area which Murrells Inlet does not. So, if it's the downtown area that you liked about Bluffton, you won't find the same thing in MI. MI is more of an area with it's commercial businesses in a series of either strip malls or just businesses located along the highway. Just about anywhere you would live in MI would be within 30 minutes of the beach although much of MI shoreline is marshy. Many locals go to Huntington Beach State Park and buy and season pass. Other spots for beach access include Garden City if you can find a place to park. There are plenty of restaurants in MI and even more if you want to drive up toward Myrtle Beach or down to Pawleys Island. Live entertainment (bands) can be found at the local bars or in Myrtle Beach at the various theaters that offer live shows. There is nothing close to MI like Savannah or Hilton Head. Myrtle Beach is touristy like Savannah without the history and river. Once might consider Pawleys Island to Hilton Head but that might be somewhat of a stretch.
As far as an apartment for his mom, options are probably somewhat limited in MI and you might have to look towards Surfside or MB for more variety although either would meet your 10-20 minutes depending on where in MI you would live. Generally the entire area is nice and safe but, like anywhere, there are certain specific spots that one would want to avoid living due to crime.
Best bet is to visit the MI area and find a realtor or someone familiar with the area to show you around. Just driving around on your own might work but you're probably going to miss some areas that you might be interested in simply because you don't know that they are there.
