I will be a grad student in the fall for 10 months in a Master program. I was referred by a recent graduate to an apartment that is $750 a month on the north side of campus. The apartment is furnished and includes most all utilities (with electricity and gas). The apartments are generally meant for international students or grad students, who would be at Vanderbilt short-term.

Does anyone know if this is an average price for the area? I have looked through a few sources; it seems like there are extremes, either really cheap housing ~$600 a month, which I don't really know the condition of, or really high-end places that are well over $1,000 a month. What are the expected costs of utilities in the Vanderbilt area?

Really depends on how warm (or cold) you keep your apartment and how many hot showers you take and for how long? I have a small house and electric and gas run about $120 on average? Electric higher in the summer, gas higher in the winter.

Cable TV/internet/phone can be $99 in a bundle or more or less depending on what you want.

I assume water/garbage is covered as well? Ours runs maybe $30 - $40.

$750 sounds like a good deal to me. Other apartments might require a 12 month lease.

This sounds like a great price for a hot spot on/near West End. One decent grocery near Centennial Park. Or you can eat out at your choice of fast food options or higher priced fine dining. West End puts you within walking of any Vandy sporting event. Short bus ride downtown for other events.

Thanks all.

The person who referred me lived in the place last year. It is on State Street. I'm gonna go with it

Just looked at a crime map...is the area around the Baptist Hospital dangerous? Seems like a lot of burglaries on the other side of Charlotte Ave and Theft/Larceny in the area. Seems the only okay areas are directly west and south of Vanderbilt's campus

The area empties out at night and is on the periphery of North Nashville, which is rough. In the day, it would be fine. At night, I wouldn't feel safe walking.

Your best bet is around Hillsboro Village. You will likely pay 75-100 more though.

I don't get it. Baptist Hospital doesn't look like anywhere near the North side of Nashville.

I'm taking about the Baptist Hospital right by campus (beside Centennial Medical Center)

On a map it doesn't make sense. On the ground though, it just happens to be near a particularly ghetto part of Charlotte Ave, so you get some run off. In the day you will be fine though. At night, there are much better areas.

Anyway, I would assume you're talking about the apartments near 18th and State.

Do a Google Street View for
- 16th Ave & State Street
- 17th Ave & Patterson St (Lee's Market).
