We have a tree that is throwing huge green lumpy things. What are these things? We have 2 dogs, are these harmful?

Yep, lucky you. You have an osage orange tree. Some people call them hedgeapples; my kids call them monkey brains.

They are not toxic to pets, and you might see squirrels feasting on smushed ones.

Oh yeah Hedgeapples. They smell horrible if you get them on your hands IMO. I've heard that they are great at deterring insects from places like garages and basements, however. I've never tried it myself.

My dog (RIP) would chase tennis balls all day long...she used to find these and bring them all around the house. She'd eat them occasionally too...never had any issues with her getting sick but I'm sure it wasn't good for her.

Hedgeapples!

I use to load them into a potato cannon and shoot them, that was fun. They have a really super sticky sap in them though.

Other than stepping on them and tripping or getting hit in the head by one falling, they're harmless. A bit of a mess to clean up and do stink as they rot away.

That's funny. Up here in the Detroit area we call them "Spider Balls" and buy them at the farmer's market every year around this time and put them everywhere in our house - my wife swears they work. Our whole block has a noticeable spider "problem". I'm glad we're not in an area that has brown recluse spiders.
