I'll be staying at a downtown hotel that wants to charge me $26 a night to park my rental car there. This is a bit over-kill as I will end up paying more for my parking space than the rental car ! Is there any neighborhood near downtown where I could park my rental car and still remain safe ? I am looking forward to my first visit to your city and don't want to spend it all on parking. Thanks in advance for your greatly appreciated information.

Hotel parking can be stupidly ridiculous at times.

First, I would not advise a surface parking lot for overnight parking (nor any street parking space, for a variety of reasons).

I would look into a garage. I'm not sure what it's like parking there overnight...but most of them have a daily rate that maxes out at $12-13. However, that could change if there is a special event. You might want to check before parking overnight.

Here is a website that shows the parking garages downtown. I'm not sure which hotel you are staying at, but you should be able to find something within a few blocks at most. Click on the different icons to find out the rates of each garage.

The cheapest garage is the Library which is $8 for a 24 hour period BUT i don't think that allows in and out privileges. MAYBE your best bet would be to stay in a hotel in the suburbs and drive into downtown Nashville and just pay for the parking when you are actually doing something in the city?

Why do you want to stay downtown? I mean, if you want to stay downtown then will you really need a car?

That parking map is good but do be aware that some garages are FULL during events and except for hotel parking there is no guarantee there is a space at any of them. But if you want to just park and leave the car, the Library is the cheapest and should be safe. It is across the street from the Convention Center.

Thanks for the info. I am staying at the Sheraton and can not change my reservations. I'll be doing the Nashville touristy things with a side trip to Franklin,Tn and one up to Bowling Green,Ky to see some old friends who have retired there.

I'd definitely look at the library lot. The Sheraton isn't exactly close to most of the touristy stuff (aside from the Capitol building), but it's a doable walk.

If you don't already know, Franklin is about a 20 mile, 20-25 minute drive to the south (perhaps 30 minutes from downtown Nashville to downtown Franklin). Bowling Green is a good hour north of Nashville.

I would not stay downtown to avoid parking prices. If you have not already made hotel reservations or can cancel without penalty then I would suggest you stay in a nice suburban hotel that has Free parking. Have fun!

OP already stated they are staying downtown and can't change reservations.

Besides, staying downtown is a lot more fun.

Your city was a great surprise. The Schermerhorn Symphony building is something you should all be very happy to have. The acoustics there were magnificent. The 4th fireworks display was probably the very best I've ever seen. The setting on the river with the symphony playing was quite something. I heard your mayor mention that he would like to build a venue where we were all sitting on the grass to improve the area. That is a brilliant idea. What I like most about Nashville were it's people. Everyone was so friendly and that is something you unfortunately can't say about most places. Thank you, Nashville. The Library Parking Garage was perfect.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit!

It's too bad it couldn't be a tad cooler, though.

The Schermerhorn is easily the best piece of architecture built in this city in...probably 75 years. Maybe close to 100. They did it right. It's a treat to watch the symphony play there.

The grassy piece of land you are referring to used to house Nashville's thermal transfer plant...it burned more than a decade ago, and the potential use of the 11 acre city-owned property has been up for debate ever since. One of the more popular proposals has been the site for a new baseball stadium for our AAA team...but talks have stalled. I think Mayor Dean really wants something to be done with it under HIS administration (not that I really blame him), so he's trying to drum up some interest. I think an outdoor amphitheater would be great.

I'm glad that the library garage worked out for you, and especially glad that you were treated well while you were here.
