Hey, I'm a young IDM/Experimental/Ambient performer and composer and I'm wondering if moving to Nashville is a good idea for me. I hear that Nashville is famous for the amount of music always going on, but I was always under the impression it was mostly, if not all, country music. Am I wrong on this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaWGnkaYXEA is an example of the kind of music I am talking about.

Thank you for your time.

Nashville does have a wider genre of scenes than it gets credit for, for sure. Country dominates the headlines, but the recording studios are filled with all kinds.

I can't say I'm familiar with your particular genre, though, so I can't say if it would be a good idea to move here or not. We have loads of music infrastructure (studios, musicians, writers/composers), so I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility that some are familiar with, or perform that genre.

I'm not sure where you should start. Perhaps one of the organizations that represents musicians could point you in the right direction?

Thank you for your reply. It is indeed a pretty niche type of music, wherever you go, I'll admit. Is there any electronic scene there is general?

And I'm sure this has been asked many times already, but compared to a city like NY, how are people in their 20s comparatively? I'm personally trying to steer away from hookup culture and looking for people that are nicer and more down to earth. Are relationships commonplace there? (They aren't so much in NY).

ariesjow is probably the best person to ask about the electronic scene. I'd say there is a scene. I wouldn't know how 'big' it is. We have had some of the traveling acts pass through.

I haven't lived in NYC, so I can't compare people. I would say Nashville is probably a bit more relationship oriented. We have all types of people, though. Plenty are nice and down to Earth. Certainly not all.

A friend of mine's son does electronic music and did play a gig at the Exit/In. He has since moved back up to Chattanooga where he went to college. I could be wrong but I think electronic music is more popular with the under 30 crowd? So a college town might be more suited to it. However if you lived in Nashville, there's no reason you couldn't drive up to Chatt (2 hours) for concerts/gigs.

Here is a recent article on the same subject:

I would suspect people here are more down to earth than in NYC if only because pace of life is slower. People aren't in such a rush . . . . ?

I can't speak about Nashville, but I am a native New Yorker. Sure, we like to have fun and plenty of people here like to party. This city certainly subscribes to the "work hard and play hard" mentality--our 4am last call and after-hours bars/clubs are proof of that. The scene you're involved with (EDM and the like) will attract a lot of single people looking to hookup, but that shouldn't discourage you from considering New York. A relationship can be had here, you might just need to work harder to find the right partner! I have a few friends who are doing quite well as DJs here in New York, but they had to work incredibly hard to get where they are. They also have to deal with the politics of the "scene". While I can't speak about the electronic scene in Nashville, the scene here in NY is booming. You'll probably want to stick with an urban area that has a large under-30 population.

Coming from Michigan I use to think the same thing. Now being here 3 years, I can honestly say that this is Music City USA, not Country Music City USA.
