I'm looking at buying a cheap old truck (1988) for the occasional trip to home improvement stores, when I need to pick up large items, and some occasional cruising around.

I see that we have an option for "antique" plates here when your car is 25+ years old, where you only have to register one time and get custom antique plates -- and don't have to pass emissions.

The flip side of this is that you're limited to weekend only driving OR weekday driving if taking it to a mechanic or to a potential buyer.

I'm just wondering if anyone has driven with antique plates during the week and has run into trouble or if it hasn't been an issue.
Not considering this as a daily driver by any means but I wouldn't be surprised if I took it out now and again during the week.

The seller says he's basically done it -- mostly weekend driving but occasional weekday and has been fine -- but not sure whether to trust that or not.

Any insight appreciated...

Seems like I see more of them being daily driven than I used to. I've done it on the two I have without issue, and I'm getting ready to get another. I guess the cop could make an issue of it if they wanted. Used to you had to get the local police to sign off on the antique tag to supposedly verify that it was an antique car and not modified etc. They have done away with that now. FYI you still need to have liability insurance to be legal.

I expect some bright politician (oxymoron?) will figure this out, lost revenue, pollution etc., as more of these older cars get registered this way and they will make restrictions more harsh or eliminate the tags altogether.

Thanks. My impression is if you get caught you have to forfeit your right to antique plates for five years, which would mainly be an issue if you can't pass emissions. I have to imagine most cars/trucks 25+ years old wouldn't pass, or at least not without a ton of $ put into them.
