Our kids definitely play less outside because there's less "good" weather. BUT it's so fun to play in the snow. And my kids are in school so it's not like they had a lot of time outside anyway - it would've been an hour or so outside before homework, dinner, bath and/or reading time. My son is into sports and the weather is not a problem for soccer and basketball. It gets hot in the summers but we only do YMCA soccer which is in the fall and spring. And basketball is indoors in winter.

In the summers, my kids love the pool which is honestly more convenient for me than going to the beach (so we didn't really go that often anyway). Sorry but I hate getting sand everywhere. When we did go, it was just to walk around the Strand (south bay) for ice cream or something.

What I do love so far is all the nature that is nearby. There are a lot of beautiful parks (with waterfalls!) that we love visiting. Winter isn't that bad, we still like hiking even with snow out. I know some people don't do that but our kids are pretty healthy and I don't see anything wrong with being out when it's cold out (40 deg) as long as you're bundled up.

Yes all the storms (and rain and hail!) is pretty crazy. I lived in SF and LA though so I'm used to the unpredictability of earthquakes, having been through the big ones in both cities. You just can't control mother nature, if it's your time.
