New to Nashville area. Work in Brentwood. Husband says I need a hobby or friends but have NO idea where to look for such. Most sites are for singles, which I am not. We do not have a church picked out. I really don't HAVE any hobbies. Been a working mom for past 20 years! I am 40 years old and in a new environment. Any ideas?

In another year and a half I will be moving to a new place and I won't be working any more. I have decided to start off doing some volunteer work either at the Chamber of Commerce or the local hospital, where I can get to know some local folks and do something to give back too. If Nashville has a Ronald McDonald House, they are nice to volunteer at too and can do in evening or weekend.

I'm new to town as well and one way I'll be meeting people (other than eventually working) is that my sweetie and I are going to join a bowling league.

I'm not religious, have no kids with me to join a PTA, I'm also not really single, but would love to meet some others at some point. I know I found a newcomers group in Murfreesboro - maybe your town has one too?

K100, you are only limited by you imagination and desire. Just some suggestions depending on what your interests are: volunteer work as there are dozens of organizations that need you; take a class in an area of interest such as photography; join a club such as a bike or bridge club or civic organization; get involved with a church that has a very active congregation; if you don't already do it, start exercising everyday.
You might want to start out by doing a self assessment. What are your strengths and interests? Do you like being around and working with people or would you rather find a hobby you can do by yourself? What personal areas do you want to improve upon?
Saying that you "have NO idea where to look for such" when talking about hobbies or friends makes me think that you have led a somewhat uninvolved or sheltered life. It sounds to me like you have a great opportunity(with your husband's support) to get involved with something of your choosing and really enjoy life. I won't wish you good luck on doing any of the above because it doesn't take any luck, just a decision.

I didn't know about a newcomers group in the boro. Could you send me the info on it?

I am in the same boat. It is hard to make new friends when your whole life has previously been wrapped up in your kids and a job. I know where you are coming from. I left a big circle of friends and have found it is not as easy at this stage of the game. I am 39 and have been here about 6 months. How long have you been in the area? I have seen info posted here about a new comers club in Brentwood. Maybe that would be something you would like.

Have you tried Meetup: World's largest community of local Meetups, clubs and groups! - Meetup.com I DM'd you some more info on it. I have signed up for one of the group but have not actually gone to any of the functions yet.

Good luck. I know that moving to a new place can be trying but hopefully soon it will feel as comfortable as the place you left.

I agree with gbone. For me, there is so much that I would love to do, learn and be a part of that I seriously have to prioritize. What are your dreams? Knit? Garden? music? hike? What would you do if you had nothing else using your time? What is your passion? Figure that out and go for it...you will find friends in the things that you love to do.

It's me again! I know how hard it is to balance work, family and self....I usually put ME last. Think about the activties or subjects that make you really happy and search in that direction.

Hubby and I are planning on moving to Tn in October this year. I have already scoped out some activities that I enjoy here in San Diego to do in Nashville when we move. I am an outgoing (not shy) personality anyways, and I am really excited about being a part of my new hometown.

It's so nice that the people on these boards are helpful to one another. Makes me look forward to the move to the Nashville area that much more. The two years we've been in Memphis have been unpleasant and having no friends made it that much worse. And I tried, believe me!

I know what you mean K100, I'm an empty nester now too and it's tougher to make friends when you don't have "the kid thing". I hope we finally settle in a family area as I really miss being around kids.

My new job will have me traveling a lot during the week..might be tough to make friends with that added wrinkle as well...but I'm hoping we have better luck in Nashville!
