I am considering moving to Pleasant View, Tennessee. I am originally from the San Francisco Area and my husband is from Knoxville. We are both interested in a quieter life that what we have had in Albuquerque where we currently reside. We have two boys and want to offer them some land to run and explore on. We have friends in the area and would be joined by my sister-in-law and her family. My question is if there are any other people who have a relatively similar background of urban/suburban life and liberal backgrounds that have moved to smaller Tennesse towns and how they have felt about the change. I am not used to living in an area that has so little ethnic diversity but am open-minded. I love the area, it is absolutely beautiful and my superficial interactions with people in the area have been nothing but wonderful. Any input would be welcome! Thanks.

I grew up not far from Pleasant View in east Montgomery County, and still have friends and family in PV.

While PV is not particularly ethnically diverse itself, for most people who live there a part of their lifestyle involves working and doing things in Nashville (and also Clarksville and Springfield). All in all, I don't think you will find that you're living in some sort of white only community.

Oh, honey! Let's have lunch.

We're from NorCA. Been here 7 years. Liberals. Also wary of the vanilla situation, but you know what? We freakin' love it here, and I bet you will too.

*"Vanilla situation"

LOL, I like that.

The "Vanilla situation" is very good here. I only counted ''four chocolates'' at our county fair in the two nights we stayed from 5pm till closing at midnight ( Wed/Fri ) .

Speaking of opening minds.... seems like vanilla situations might have had something to do with the invention of Western Civilization ... and the modern industrial economy ... and high culture ... and the advanced sciences. In short, vanilla situations must be OK if you think about it. In other words nothing to be guilty about or wary of.

Don't you know that being proud to be white is not "politically correct," even though every other ethnic group is encouraged by society to be proud of their heritage.

Personally, I don't think anyone should feel like they can't be proud of who they are and where they came from, whether they're black, white, Asian, whatever. Unfortunately, a lot of our "progressive" society doesn't agree with me.

I'm guessing that this post and the two above it will be deleted, which will only serve to buttress my point.

I'm shocked. Of all the negative Southern stereotypes, I have found racism to be the least evident. Now this. I guess you never can tell.

I imagine nolpatrick is reconsidering that move after reading these posts.

Amazing....

Would you consider it to be racist if someone expressed hesitation about moving to a certain area because it was "too dark" or "too chocolate"?

If so, then explain how your "vanilla situation" comment was acceptable.

That is the point I was trying to make in my original post, that there is a double-standard in our "progressive" society.

I am not racist in any way and I believe that every race should be treated equally. Unfortunately, society has overcompensated for past mistakes which has resulted in the aforementioned "white guilt."
