My husband and I had our first experience with cajun food at Steamboat Bill's in Hendersonville.

Someone told us to go to Chappy's on Church in Nashville for authentic cajun food. I just checked the menu and don't see gumbo, etufee (spelling?) like Steamboat Bill's has.

I'm not sure if we should spend the money going into Nashville to Chappy's.

Has anyone gone to Chappy's?

I've been to Chappy's. It's definitely a good place. The menu, however, does not have your typical cajun items (i.e. gumbo). I would say it is more of a high-end fushion type restaurant, but I really couldn't tell you what authentic cajun food really is besides gumbo and etouffe.

I have heard great things about Papa Boudreaux near Columbia. He's another refugee from New Orleans. It's a little further out, and small, but I've heard people make a night of it and "tailgate" in the parking lot while waiting for a seat. A few friends and I are planning on checking it out.

Papa's Menu

As far as Chappy's I haven't heard anything bad about it, mostly good. It did get a lukewarm review in the local indie paper. This was right after it first opened though -

Thanks so much for the info. I think Papa's is definitely the kind of restaurant my husband & I are looking for. We don't mind taking a trip down that way.

Great, let me know how it is if you get there before me.

I'll let you know how Papa's is when we do go; not sure when.

First of all, I'm a big fan of Steamboat Bill's. Don't know how authentic it is. Don't care. The food tastes good.

As for Chappy's, I've been. We enjoyed it quite a bit, but it's an upscale place and you'd expect it to be good. As a counterpoint, I know a couple who went there and didn't think it was anything special, although they didn't regret having gone. If "Cajun" brings to mind a dockside hole-in-the-wall serving etouffee and gumbo and Po' Boys, it's not that. It's more of a New Orleans white-tablecloth type place.

Thanks ExIslander.

ExIslander, are you from Long Island?

No, it's a tongue-in-cheek reference to Amelia Island, Florida, where we lived before we moved up here.
