My husband's job is moving us to Nashville. I've only passed through there a few times, so I don't know a whole lot about the area. I've seen a lot of topics about renting places, but we are wanting to buy a house. What areas are the best to buy houses? We aren't looking for anything that's too expensive, just a nice starter home since we are still newlyweds. Any suggestions?

If you could give us a few more details we could help you more. How much do you want to spend? What is the longest drive time you want to place of employment? Where will employment be? What size house? Are schools important? How old a house are you willing to go with or more interested in newer homes? What amenities in both the house and near the house?

Well right now, we have a Four Bedroom, 1 Bath, with a basement. I would like to have about the same amount of rooms, I could give up a bedroom for a bathroom. We are looking to spend about 150,000. We are in our 20's with no children with no plans to have any, so schools aren't a big deal to us. We enjoy doing all kinds of different activities- from bike rides to muesems to coffe shops and shopping. We don't mind driving to get to work. He is working for a business that has four different offices- hermitage, brentwood, murfreesboro, and somewhere else- so he's always driving. We would like a property that has a little bit of room- you know, that the houses aren't right on top of one another. We don't have a preference on an old versus new home- any home would be new to us.

It is possible to find a home in Murfreesboro that fits your criteria. I'm not so sure about the basement though. For example.... There are two brand new homes near me that list for around $150,000. Both are 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with a 2 car garage, but no basement. The square footage for each is around 1250 sq. ft. and the yards are small. The small yard can be good if you don't want much yard maintenance. That is a personal preference. I am highly partial to Murfreesboro and love living here!

You might consider west nashville around Warner Park. You would be near the best places for hiking, biking , canoing and just getting out and it is also near Bellevue and not to far from 840 for him to jump onto to head over to Murfreesboro and other areas outside Nashville. You can get a nice ranch with a good size yard in the Percy Warner area for that price. Because middle TN is all rock...you will not find too many homes with basements. Welcome to Nashville

As of today there is only one house listed for sale in this area that has 3BR & 2 BA for 150k(and it's a short sale). There is nothing listed for less. This area has become a little more expensive due to the amenities surrounding it.

Personally, I would stay out of Davidson County, especially if you plan to still be living in the same house after you have kids. Believe it or not, it's not too soon to start thinking ahead about school districts. If you do decide to stay in Davidson County, I'd say stay on the west side of town. But, depending on where you guys will be working, living outside of Davidson County and commuting back into town can be just as quick, if not quicker, than trying to commute across town. I live in North Cheatham County and work in West Nashville near Belle Meade and it takes only 30 minutes to get to work. People on the other side of Nashville can't get over here in that length of time. So, living outside of the city isn't setting you up for an unmanageable commute.

Default Recently Relocated

I just moved here with my wife (we're newlyweds) and am by no means an expert on Nashville, but I would highly recommend the West side of Nashville.

We live just north of Sylvan Park, in what some folks who are native to Nashville might consider an undesirable neighborhood, and we love it. It's easy to get downtown, easy to get on the highway to get to work, and there's plenty in the area. It's also close to a couple of greenways and parks. It's also incredibly affordable, especially compared with Sylvan Park.

This is what you want right here. Safe neighborhood (no crime), up-and-coming area with appreciating home values (even in this market), great school system (important for resale), easy access to the Vietnam Veterans Bypass for a laser-fast commute to downtown.

I sound like a realtor, but I'm not one and have no stake in where you relocate. I just think this is a great deal worth taking a look at.
