The other day my uncle was scratching behind my dogs here and felt a bump. We just shrugged it off because he always gets little bumps that go away. Well today I looked and thought it was scabbed over. But when I looked closer it was a tick! Then I looked on his belly and there was another. We were able to get the whole thing out. And i have to call the vet in the am. We have been back for a week and I am guessing he got it there. Anyone know what else I should do? The one that was behnd his here, it is swollen there but not the one by the belly.

Normally there's no problem. Try to make sure you get the whole tick out of the dog's skin and wipe with a little alcohol afterward.

My dogs get ticks several times a year (usually after hikes in the woods) and I've never had one get sick from it. It's not a bad idea, however, to either save the tick or take a photo to give the vet incase your dog does get sick.

I would be very surprised if the tick managed to hang on for a whole week but I guess it's possible.

I'm not 100% sure it was from TN but I am guessing since he has never had one here and I don't think it is warm enough for them to be out here yet. Thank you for your advice. We did get the whole thing out and I did wipe it with alcohol. He surely hasn't gotten any symptoms or anything.

Yes, we do have ticks here in TN...and they LOVE dogs. The best thing you can do for your little ones is to make sure that you have them on some sort of flea and tick repellent...like frontline and also have them on some sort of heart guard.
Normally the tick issue is just more of an annoyance than anything else. Keeping them protected is KEY. Not to scare you but one of my dogs did end up with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Poor guy got really sick, but his vet took great care of him and he is back to his old crazy self. So even with preventatives, it can never been 100%. Just do tick checks, the dogs tend to enjoy them if you disguise them as a good head to toe scratch!

Yeah I am not looking forward to that. We have ticks here too I am sure but they have never gotten any :-( Not sure how much I will be letting them stay outside if they will be getting them....that we will play by ear! They had their first application of frontline right before we went for the year but apparently it didn't help :-( Anyway good thing is he seemsnot have gotten sick from it. He hasn't reacted in any way. But he is going to the vet tomorrow just to be checked out. Vet mentioned putting him on an antibiotic in case any infection got in there.

Mide as well...antibiotic can not hurt. Once you have them going on Frontline it should not be that much of a problem. My vet has no clue how my dog contracted RMSF, she had only seen it 2 other times in her career. I would not live in fear of the ticks...nor would i take away from outside time for the dogs. You best bet will be to keep your yard cut and keep your dog out of overgrown areas, you can also spray your yard with stuff that keeps the ticks to a minimum. Dogs and ticks, kind of like kids and scraped knees...its just going to happen.

Well I guess I will just have to see what happens when we move. I don't want them to suffer through them....it sure can't feel good! I'm not used to worrying about it I guess LOL. Diablo is 8 and has never had a flea or tick before this. But hopefully the stuff will do the trick. My neighbor came over to take the ticks out because I was so worried that I wouldn't get the whole thing or that I would hurt the dog!
