Has anyone been to the Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory? Is there too much light pollution to see anything? I wish that Nashville had a planetarium.

The time we went to Dyer, you were supposed to be able to view Mars. The cloud cover was getting worse, and a few in the first group to go in did see it, so I guess the light pollution wasn't too bad. By the time my son and I got up there, they called it off because clouds had moved in.
They only do a few viewing nights, and they are very dependent on the weather. But it's cool just to go up there and see the place. You need a reservation on open house nights.
BTW, the Adventure Science Center just renovated their planetarium...haven't been there in a while.

If you go on a free night, Get on line for the big telescope as soon as you walk in and sit on the stairs to wait till dark. Bring something to occupy little ones if you bring them. They usually have 1 or 2 other telescopes available too. We went once and really ejoyed it.

I was there at their last viewing of '09 with my 10 and 7 year olds and they loved it. We were viewing Jupiter and could even see some of the moons. I was a little dissappointed because I expected to see a colorful planet, but I guess when your looking at something 387024000 miles away you lose some detail.

Definitely get in line for the big telescope first. The two smaller ones are the same and most people will go there first because of the shorter line, only to find a looong line for the main telescope. There were also presentations going on in several areas, one lecture and one hands on, a video about our solar system, and several display areas.

And yes, it was very crowded!
