I mean Nashville is big enough and certainly known well enough for people to know they are talking about Nashville in Tennessee. There is no other major Nashville out there. Nashville is also known worldwide as a major entertainment city like Los Angeles. There is a Nashville in Arkansas, but it has just a little over 3,000 people and not much ever happens there. I mean there is a little town called Los Angeles in Texas, there is a pretty good sized town named Las Vegas in New Mexico and there are also little towns also in Arkansas named Jerusalem, Dallas and Houston.

Something technically could happen in one of the other "Nashvilles", so to be technically correct, they indicate it's the one in TN. Makes sense to me.

This is the list of US cities that the Associated Press uses in datelines without state names:

ATLANTA
BALTIMORE, BOSTON
CHICAGO, CINCINNATI, CLEVELAND
DALLAS, DENVER, DETROIT
HONOLULU, HOUSTON
INDIANAPOLIS
LAS VEGAS, LOS ANGELES
MIAMI, MILWAUKEE, MINNEAPOLIS
NEW ORLEANS, NEW YORK
OKLAHOMA CITY
PHILADELPHIA, PHOENIX, PITTSBURGH
ST. LOUIS, SALT LAKE CITY, SAN ANTONIO, SAN DIEGO, SAN FRANCISCO, SEATTLE
WASHINGTON

According to my stylebook, the norms they use to determine datelines include population of the city, population of its metro region, frequency of the city's appearance in the news, the uniqueness of its name and experience that has shown the name to be almost anonymous with the state where it is located.

Wmsn4life. Thanks so much for posting the AP list from your stylebook. I've never seen that listing before and it is most interesting.

Ha, I think our time has come.

A funny side note, in another forum, the folks from Charlotte were incensed because they thought we, Nashville, didn't get the state tag as often as they do. They said, they always get it. We often, are referred to without it. Nothing to fret over, I don't guess.

I hope those guidebooks teach writers the difference between the word 'anonymous' and 'synonymous'. They ain't the same.

Yes, but only one major city Nashville. The others are little towns. There are other little towns out there named after big cities, like Las Vegas, New Mexico and Los Angeles, TX.
