Urgent question. Answer needed immediately. Once I start to listen, how do I make it stop, other than unplugging my speakers?

Seriously? Close the browser tab the site is open on.

So, if my browser defaults to open a new window, instead of a tab, then I have to keep closing my whole browser. But I did find it. There are a bunch of icons in the lower right corner of the window, which do not identify themselves when hovered. The NE Arrow turns it off. No clue what the other ones do. The others are too scary to experiment with -- one of them opens a sun cloud in a Facebook account, whatever the hell that is, but I don't want to know..

By the way, I just found this mind-boggling site:
xeno-canto :: Sharing bird sounds from around the world
Over 160,000 recordings of almost 9,000 species of birds, with maps to show exactly where, when, how and by whom they were recorded. Two-thousand hours of listening pleasure. It takes a little exploration to learn how to navigate the site.

Xeno-canto is fantastic! I use it a lot. Every time I hear some exotic bird species mentioned in books, magazines, TV or movies, I search the website to listen to recordings of its call/song. I've kept various aviary birds for most of my life. Many captive bred aviary birds are prized for their complex territorial songs. A few times I used the site to familiarize myself with the vocalizations a potential new resident would have. My aviary is indoors. The last thing you'd want is something so loud or screechy it shatters eardrums.
