How does it know?
It "knows" it's warmer than the cold stuff and colder than the hot stuff. It is this contrarian nature that proves there is life of Mars. :duh:

they're not so much growing up as they are growing out, it's caused by the centrifugal force of the earths rotation. If it wasn't for their roots anchoring them down, plants would be frung up into the air.

You get frizzies when you get frung. Just sayin'....

My question would be if plants know up from down because of gravity, then why can't people buried in an avalanche tell which way is up and which way is down?

Confusion and chaos - my job here is done. So I should leave now, huh?

They can if they aren't hysterical, that's easy, all they need to do is SPIT, and see which way it goes... Now they know which way is DOWN.

It is a common science experiment for fairs and what not. Kids will grow something like Brassica (the grow really fast) in a clear or hydroponic medium to see which has a stronger effect gravitaxis or phototaxis.

Roots grow in the same direction of gravity, this is another form of gravitaxis. If you are talking about stems, they also exhibit phototaxis, which is growing towards light. Along the sides of a container seeds will be draw to growing towards the light as much as in opposition to gravity
