So I'm maybe looking at moving to the Pacific Northwest in a few years and my husband is pretty into fly fishing. We also camp regularly. We'd probably want to live in or near the Portland-to-Seattle corridor, though. So, with that in mind, what areas are good for outdoor activities? Like which cities/towns would be within 2 hours or so of camping/fishing spots?
I have tried googling and I get a ton of individual campgrounds & fishing spots, and I'm looking for more of a broad overview. Hoping someone here has opinions.
The question isn't being within 2 hours of fishing, it's how close do you need to be to what city?
My first suggestion would be along the Cowlitz River. There are several towns along the river that are commutable to I-5. Along the Cowlitz you're minutes from places to camp and fish, not hours. In these areas, the time and distance to I-5 tends to affect how accessible places feel to civilization.... you can find a good balance in Vader or Toledo if you need to commute often up and down I-5 - Mossyrock if you don't need to go to the big city often.
I don't NEED to be close to any particular city, I just prefer to be near ... city stuff. Like restaurants and shopping. So I'd like to live in a place like Tacoma or Eugene or Salem or a suburb of Portland or Seattle. But camp on the weekends.
OK... well, from Tacoma, you're still within 2 hours of fishing on the Cowlitz that I recommended above, or many other fly fishing rivers and camping locations in the Cascades or up on the Peninsula. I'd also suggest, there is a whole new world of fishing for your hubby to explore on Puget Sound. Salmon and many types of cod.
We are kind of looking back and forth between the PNW and New England and I'm hoping the fly fishing will help convince him we should go with the PNW. Thank you!

Does he do any spey fishing? Once I started fighting big ol' steelheads out west I got hooked. You can fly into Portland and be on the Sandy River the same day. Another good destination is the Umpqua. Even if you don't move to Oregon, you should at least check out the fishing there.
