OK, so I'm in the last year of my graduate program in Advertising, and I'm super excited! I'd like to ask a couple questions from people in Nebraska for some research. If you have a few minutes, I'd really appreciate your answers!! My project is to develop an ad campaign for a furniture store.

1. Are people in Nebraska aware of Ikea?

2. If there was an Ikea store located in Lincoln, do you think it'd be successful? and why?

3. What do you think would be the biggest reason as to why Lincoln residents would or would not be interested in an Ikea store opening in their city?

THANKS soooo much for your input!!! I really appreciate it. I'll be sure to post again in 3 weeks with my final grade!!

-Evie

yes. just like the vast majority of big retailers, we might not have them, but we don't live in caves, either.

Possibly. Lincoln is a young-ish, educated town.

New options always generate interest. Plus, it's not just another mass merchandiser, aka WalMart.

Some of us are, but it might be due to the fact that we have kids living in Minneapolis.

2. If there was an Ikea store located in Lincoln, do you think it'd be successful? and why?
I think Omaha would be a MUCH better location choice. Lincoln does not have enough population, and it's a different kind of population.

Lincoln has a rather rural/cowboy "feel" to it. IKEA is pretty much the exact opposite kind of store.

1. Are people in Nebraska aware of Ikea?
Yes. We're a city of 250,000 people. It's not like we're disconnected from the rest of the world.

2. If there was an Ikea store located in Lincoln, do you think it'd be successful? and why?
No probably not. I've found Ikea to be an overpriced store that alot of yuppie's shop at. We have alot of families here but not too many yuppies.

3. What do you think would be the biggest reason as to why Lincoln residents would or would not be interested in an Ikea store opening in their city?
Listed above. It's an overpriced yuppy centered store and most of Lincoln would rather get the same thing for less.

THANKS soooo much for your input!!! I really appreciate it. I'll be sure to post again in 3 weeks with my final grade!!

*sigh* This annoys me. It doesn't have the "big city" feel to it that Omaha does, but it CERTAINLY does NOT feel cowboyish.

I am just really curious to know if an actuarial study will show that Ikea could "fly" in Lincoln...or Omaha. I would guess that the business would need a very large population ... since the contemporary furniture is a matter of taste(i.e. would be a choice up against traditional).

But, Ikea carries some really, snappy items that would appeal to starter homes...like high chairs that are slick, light weight and cheap. And, SW, as well as South Lincoln is growing new homes, up, out of green lawns.

(Years ago, I was a teacher at East High. It frustrated me that so few of the kids knew a cantalope from an ear of corn..or cared. I don't think farming and ranching was high on their list. Almost all of them thought that the earth ended somewhere over the 9th and O viaduct.)

When did you work at East? My husband went to school there from 92 (or so) to 1999.

There is no way that the store would locate in either city. The population/demographics are just not there to support it. I think that the nearest one is in Minneapolis wich has a metro of around 3 million. K.C. Does not even have one, and they are at 2 million. If you cheat and put Omaha/Lincoln together you get just past 1 million people. Maybe in 50 years......
