I am seriously considering moving to rural Western Nebraska, possibly the Valentine area, to teach in the rural schools. I would like to hear about the rural schools, the good and the bad, and would also like to hear from any teachers who have experience teaching in the rural schools. I am in love with the beauty and the serenity of the rural Western Nebraska area, and I believe I would love to teach there. I realize that the rural schools have multi-grade classrooms, and for me, that would not be a deterrent, or a problem. Any responses will be greatly appreciated! I currently live in a rural part of central Illinois, so I know what life is like in a rural environment, but I want to know more about life in rural Western Nebraska, the good, the bad, and the ugly, too! Thanks!!

No replies...hmmm. Well Valentine is a pretty small cattle town. Very nice people. Lovely countryside along the Niobrara River Valley. Schools are in significant flux due to passage of LB126 and the closing of most rural schools out here. I think Cherry County only has a handful left. It's pretty barren country. They have an Alco store and a McDonalds, and a Dollar General....that's about it.

Default Rural Nebraska

Do you really think that you understand rural real rural life like it is in rural Nebraska. We have only 1.7 million people living in a state the size of the country Germany. 1.2 million of these live within about 30 minutes of either Omaha or Lincoln. Here is a web site that you can go to and see what real rural life in Nebraska by looking at the beauty of our western part of Nebrasaka.

http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/

Surf this web site and you will see what we hide from the millions of people who drive across our fine state on I-80 and think that Nebraska is just a flat state with nothing to see.

OK, well I live in valentine, out in the country now.. but I was in town before.
I don't know a darn thing about the schools.
I know about living here.
If you're an outdoor enthusiast, you'll LOVE it, there is SO much to offer!
I grew up in your area, so I know about where you come from. However, your "rural" and our rural, are NOT the same. I suggest you come out and stay for about two weeks and really get into the nitty gritty of this place.

we are also right on the boarder of SD and the Rosebud Reservation.. so that provides ample opportunities as well. If you have any issues there, then you might want to look at them, since so many tribal members come to valentine, and live here. But during the summers there is always things going on up there too.

You need to really enjoy nature, if you need a lot of outside stimulation, you wont' do well here. The closest "big" city is four hours from here in any direction. When I say a Big city, I mean anyplace that has a walmart.
Ok, I hope this helped.. email me if you ahve more questions.

Well I teach in rural, western Nebraska. I even taught for a couple of years in a one-room in eastern Sheridan co. about 10 years ago. And another year in a three-grade combined classroom about three years ago.

However, since this thread is over three years old, I won't bother getting into details. lol

I get a huge kick how threads on this forum 1, 2, even 3 years old can suddenly get a reply and pop up like they are something new. You can bet that the OP has probably moved on and forgot they even asked the original question here by now.

What generally happens is these OLD threads pop-up on the "SIMILAR THREADS" list. Someone will respond and resurrect an old thread.

Sometimes I enjoy talking to myself, so one way to encourage that is to go back through old threads and revisit my conversations.
