Have you had the chance to visit Amesbury yet? It's one of my favorite towns in MA, and probably where I would end up if I had to move back to MA. It's unpretentious, sort of a Newburyport-light. Not quite as artsy, but a great little downtown with many independently-owned shops & restaurants. We enjoy the paved bike trail, and biking along River Road as well. Schools could be better BUT motivated parents go a long way in achieving success. Easy access to Rte 494 and 95,

Our family of three chose Sunapee. It is a few minutes from I-89, but I don't think it is very close to I-95.

All of the outdoor activities you could ask for, and quiet. Not sure on the schools since we have no kids in school. We look to be a couple hours from the coast, which may be too far inland. Still, it's worth a look. The housing prices seem affordable.

Quite frankly, no small town in New Hampshire wants any family with children that will drain the resources of the school system.

There was the story of one small town in Grafton County that paid a family that wanted to move into that town - paid them to move to another town.

Urban myth? Possibly.
Was this illegal? Yes.
I did hear the story from primary sources.
Was this story in the print media? No.
Does this happen in small town New Hampshire?
Ask around.

I actually do remember seeing a program when I lived up there in 07 on PBS or the likes about small towns in NH trying to discourage families from moving there because it raises the tax rates they have to pay out for schools education parts etc. Some of the towns were specifically building no children allowed communities. Its really sad

It may have happened, but in this day & age it's not likely. Back in the day (1970s & before) things happened in NH that would surprise people for sure.

Small NH towns can act in odd ways. Just look up the Carl Drega story (from beginning to end).
