Hello! My family and I will be moving to Hanover/Lebanon area and are looking for an apartment. We are a young family, and new parents. We were looking at Emerson Place Apartment and Timberwood Commons. Any experience with either of these? Any other recommendations? Thank you!

I have no experience with these.

If you have a choice live in Hanover and not Lebanon.

Hanover has a beautiful downtown. Lebanon lost it's downtown in the 1960's Urban Renewal craze. Killed the downtown. Nice common green/park in central Lebanon. And Lebanon does have the Carter Recreation building. Donated by the Carter family - of Carter clothing fame (now defunct).

Most of the big box shopping stores are located in West Lebanon (part of Lebanon) - near the river.

Hanover has better schools. Lebanon schools are just OK.

If your budget has choices - choose Hanover.

thanks for the reply. I'm having trouble finding rentals in general, but especially in Hanover. Both apartment complexes I mentioned are very close to the hospital, and are technically in Lebanon (i believe) Our daughter isn't old enough for school yet (only 3 months!) and we are only planning on being there 1 year (my husband is finishing up his training at the hospital... so there is a possibility we stay longer but if so we'd buy a house at that point). So for just one year, and to be near the hospital, those 2 apartment complexes are really all I've seen. I also saw Gile Hill but read very bad reviews on this forum and other places online. So if there are any other suggestions for rentals we'd appreciate it. Thanks

Both apartment complexes look to be newer type since I lived and worked in Lebanon. Each is on one or the other side or US Interstate Route 89. That intersection can be quite busy during work hours. Each complex is far enough from highway to not worry about highway noise.

Each locations has it's advantages. The one on the south of Route 89 is closer to downtown Lebanon and a doable walk for shopping. The one on the north side of Route 89 is close enough to walk to hospital and that one is much more rural.

Both mentioned apartments would be fine. If you only have one automobile choose the one on the south of Route 89. If two automobiles choose the one north of Route 89.

Both areas are safe. Then it also comes down to rent prices and apartment amenities. Check placement and number of parking spaces allowed for each. First floor would be fine at each if any available. Both Lebanon and Hanover are safe towns.

This area of New Hampshire is quite safe and a good destination. There is an FAA manned airport in West Lebanon. Don't know if they still have scheduled flights. But lots of unimportant and important people fly in and out of Lebanon. Lebanon also has the Headquarters for the US government Cold Weather testing facility. Lots of big box shopping in West Lebanon. As mentioned earlier Lebanon has the Carter Center which is kind of like a recreation center donated to town by the Carter family years ago. Lots of activities there.

In any new community I suggest joining the local Lions Club. You will get to know many locals quite quickly and be able to network for any good services that you may need and of course meet some good locals and probably many in the same situation as yourself. Lebanon also has a local chapter of the Fraternal Order Of Eagles in Lebanon. Another good charitable organization.

This area of New Hampshire is one of the best and you should have a very good time. Remember though that this is rural or small town New Hampshire. For medical care though Mary Hitchcock hospital is finest in the state. Yes, it used to be called Mary Hitchcock Hospital.

I have met more then a few doctors and lawyers who attened Dartmouth College and have never left the area.

Good Luck and enjoy your stay.

Know the place well, even back to when it was MHH.

Given that my SO and I are in the medical community in NH, and have been for a long time, I will tend to dispute that statement.
Just don't have a heart attack, pneumonia or heart failure if you are there.

Look here: http://www.nhpghscorecard.org/hospitalratings.cfm

Dartmouth medical school is rated 34th for a research institute, and 22th for a primary-care school.

Yes, indeed.

All hospitals have issues. Unknown infections are almost universal now in all hospitals.

Catholic Medical Center in Manchester is known as a very good heart hospital.

But note, when there is a serious car accident where do they medivac the seriously injured? Either Dartmouth Hitchcock or Boston. Not your local average hospital.

There are more specialists at Dartmouth Hitchcock hospital. Dartmouth Hitchcock is also a teaching hospital.

Does this mean that one patient will get the best care all of the time? No hospital can claim that.

I have worked at a few hospitals in my day. It is amazing how the doctors and staff can cover up "mistakes" - at any hospital.

All in all I'd rather be a patient at Dartmouth Hitchcock then any other NH hospital other then heart issues - and then it would be Catholic Medical on the West side of Manchester.
