My husband and I currently make a good living in northern NJ, but we don't like the stressful life here. I am entertaining the idea of selling our house and moving to NH for a more relaxed lifestyle. We both love mountains, lakes, and trees. Neither of us like cities.
I am a software engineer, husband works in IT. Which places in NH should we look at for jobs? We are young (in our early 30's), and don't have kids at the moment.
If we do move, we'd rent in NH for a while. We do want to build a timber frame home eventually. (I read that there are a few good timber home builders in NH.)
Check out Dyn in Manchester. A growing B2B enterprise software company. Chosen as 1 of 25 to watch by business insider magazine; the only one in New England. I know people there if it would help....
I am in IT myself. IT jobs are much more common in Massachusetts around Boston and along the 495 corridor. Good paying IT jobs in NH are much relatively scarce. A lot of people live in southern NH and commute to these MA jobs.
I don't blame you for wanting to leave NJ but what are the specific causes of stress there that you referred to? Southern NH and northern MA are not exactly the most laid back places you know.
geoff5093, I will focus on the two cities you mentioned.
Declan's Dad, I think the causes of our stress include daily traffic, overly crowded grocery stores & streets, high property tax, constant maintenance & improvement of the house & property so that we don't fall behind the neighbors, etc. When I am home, I usually don't feel relaxed. However, it feels very different (in a good way) when we visit our relatives in the deep mountains. That's how we got the idea of possibly moving to a mountain/lake area (e.g. NH), so we can relax and enjoy life a bit more.
Liberty Mutual Insurance (84th on Fortune 100 and 3rd largest property and casualty insurance company in the US) has it's largest concentration of IT in New Hampshire split between Dover and Portsmouth. There are currently 74 IT openings in those two locations, many with multiple positions available. Insurance Careers and Opportunities at LibertyMutualGroup.com

My hubby got a great job in Bedford, NH and his boss let him work from home when we had to leave NH almost two years ago.
He still works from home for his Bedford boss!!
He's an IT support help/desk manager for Comstar NH. I will ask him if he knows of any places looking if you want to work in NH-hubby doesn't make as much as he would in Mass for example, but the trade off to have steady income while we move all over the country like Gypsies with our butts on fire is priceless.
