I'm hoping for some advice about nice towns to retire in. An artsy community; relatively low property and income taxes; good health care; a college town or liberal place; and not right on the coast (I worry about flooding in the future). We're former Minnesotans now in New York and looking to live near forest and lakes or rivers. Wondering about Maine; I've heard Vermont is very expensive. Any ideas? Thanks.
Yes I guess that's true, that liberal states have higher taxes. I'm hoping for a happy middle-of-the-road place. And I'm looking for no tax on Social Security income. Thanks for your thoughts.
New Hampshire does NOT have an income tax and is not likely to ever have one. Most of our taxes are collected on a town level as property taxes. I suggest you should look at some of the smaller town inland of Portsmouth or around Peterborough or Keene. If you want access to mountains Littleton and vicinity are also places you might find compatible.
FWIW: even the "liberal" towns in NH are very conservative.
In the meantime buy a copy of the "New Hampshire Atlas and Gazetteer" by DeLorme maps. This will provide a wealth of information on the roads, recreation and towns around the state.
Good luck and pay us a visit in both the winter and summer.

Just wondering what you found out! I'm looking for the same, only not retiring. Thanks!
