Hi, we are planning to go tent camping in New Hampshire (Conway-Franconia Notch area) and wonder what is the best time to do it - mostly mosquito-wise. I get a really bad reaction to their bites . I understand that if we go in December I will be safe, but it woudn't be the season of my choice.

That'd be like choosing the lesser of two evils. You'll freeze in December but be eaten up in July.. Spring might be a better choice or late autumn

I was up in the deep woods of Northern NH in August and i think i had more problems with the horse flies than the mosquitos but i would say probably late spring before it gets too hot for them or early fall when it starts getting cooler.

I would recommend early fall around Columbus day. Better yet just after as the tourist have gone for the year but the weather and foliage are still decent. Happy camping!

Since the invention of Polar Fleece mosquitos have become a year round menace. The feared ice cutting critters can chew through two feet of frozen lake and suck any warm blooded creature dry in an instant. Only downhill skiers can move fast enough to excape the flying blood suckers.

and you thought Steve King had an imagination.

In my experience, mosquitoes weren't much of a problem until mid-July through frost. And even then, about an hour before dusk, and 2 hours afterward was when they were most vicious. Tara mentions EEE, yes a valid concern, not so much during June and July, but as summer wanes toward fall, the incidence of the virus (bacteria?) increases. The vast majority of EEE comes in September and October. A good repellent is a MUST.

I use AVON skin so soft lotion here in FL. I'm usually a mosquito magnet but they hate the smell of that lotion and i can actually sit outside without being bothered by them once I lotion up. And it smells better than those sprays.
