I am retired to the North Carolina coast. I am suffering so much from the heat, I am researching other locations.

Bedford seems great, but yesterday I was shocked to see the daytime high temperature (93) was hotter than in North Carolina (at 91). What is the typical summer weather like in Bedford? When does it cool down and feel like fall?

It cools down after Labor Day. This has been an unusually hot summer but there are always some really hot days in any summer.

Winters are bad unless you like sub freezing temperatures, ice, deep snow, and being stuck in the house for days on end. You're retired so you probably wouldn't benefit from the upsides of winter like skiing.

Well, I love to knit, so I would enjoy being able to wear my sweaters indoors for long periods of time!

This Summer has been very unusual. It's been very hot (and usually humid) with very few breaks. There has also been no rain.

Typically, we will have a few uncomfortably hot days (mid-90s, higher humidity), but then that will break and we'll have a cycle of beautiful days, like high-70s-mid-80s, low humidity and cooler at night. Normally it will cycle back & forth like that from about late June through early-middle of August when the H&H days become fewer. Lots of people up here don't even bother with a/c (I am not one of them!)

IMO, July tends to be the hottest month. This year, it's just been constantly very hot, with very few of the breaks we are used to.

You might want to consider coastal Washington State (Oak Harbor, connected to the mainland by bridge, or Friday Harbor, need to take a ferry to the mainland). If you don't mind some snow (not a lot actually, just some) you could consider Juneau, Alaska. It's gorgeous there, though it does rain *a lot*.

Good luck!

I've had enough of this summer. Maybe my tolerance for heat has gotten shorter as I get older, but seems like we've had some really hot summers lately. If I wanted heat and humidity like this, I'd move to Florida. I sweat easily and run hot (so my friends tell me), so the combo of 90+ plus humidity makes me miserable. Put me out in the sun on a day like that, forget about it - I will be drenched in sweat and have heat rashes. Everyone is different, but I could not live without A/C, especially for sleeping at night during hot spells which seem to be frequent lately.

Of course, Southern summers are probably worse so I shouldn't complain too much. I really hope the pattern changes and we get some mid-80s days with low humidity and nights in the 50s, perfect sleeping weather. Fall? I can't wait. My favorite time of year....

Why would you say that? I'm not quite retired yet but getting closer than I'd like and I am getting a snowmobile, skis, snowshoes, skates, and a sled or toboggan when I get there next year. I can't wait to do all the fun winter things I've missed for the last 26 years. I have every intention of doing every one of those things for years to come.

Florida summers are way worse than your bad days. It's been low 90s and humidity in the 90s percentile. Just horrid. For months and months, not just a few days here and there. Be grateful. I can't wait to get away from it and have weather like you were describing. I've forgotten what it's like to be able to open one's windows and get a cool breeze and fresh air.

Last night at midnight, it was still 99 degrees in Washington, DC.

For cooler summer weather in NH, seek north of Bedford. Or east. Higher elevations or closer to the seacoast should have relatively cooler temps than southern, western, and central NH.

Our state is small, but we have a wide range of geographic area types.

In the Monadnocks, 1/2 hour west of Bedford, temps are 5-10 degrees cooler, especially the towns higher up like Dublin where we live.

Same would be true further north in the mountains.

No offense to Bedford residents, but the corridor between Concord and Nashua, and extending all the way over to Portsmouth, seems to me to be much more oriented to working families, often commuting into Boston and its northern suburbs. Retirees like my wife and me tend to settle further north or west.

I think I heard Concord has had over 20 days in the 90s this year. That is very atypical. and in addition to that MANY days in the upper 80s. I ran my Air conditioner for almost the entire month of July. According to this story concord typically only hits 90 12 times a year (even that seems high to me)

NH1 First Alert Weather: Hot NH summer continues; Concord hits 90 for 18th time this year | NH1

We have had summers where I have only needed to use the A/C for like 4-5 days.

With that said, im LOVING this summer. Owning a pleasure boat helps. Lots of days on the lake with lake water in the 80s is divine.
