Agreed, I live next to New London, and it seems I89 going north can be a handful in winter. Not as bad going south--but I've been surprised at how greasy it can be at Bow. I think my wife likes Lebanon better, I might like Concord better--but we're agreed, New London and the area is where we'd rather be. Hopkinton might be another good place.
I'd live outside of New London, skip Crossfit and bike to work. Riding up that hill into New London will count as a workout.
I do find the roads iffy for bicycling but traffic is low enough so I don't care. I realize that the more work you have to do to get to the gym, the less likely you are to go: but commuting is a time-suck (I know, I do two hours a day). I presume the college has a gym of some sort, and it's the middle of nowhere: there is hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing...
IMO it's a buyer's market up here, as long as it's not on a lake or in downtown New London or anyplace super desirable. It's heating up for the summer season though, finally seeing some properties move.
