Husband and I are from Maine, we both have degrees in criminal justice, he is currently working as a correctional officer while I am a stay at home mother of eight wonderful children ages 16 to 8 weeks. We are not looking to buy a home, but would rather rent a large house in a safe, rural area where we won't be judged by the size of our family. My husband would like to continue working in corrections, so this would be an important factor when we find a place to settle. I prefer to stay home with the kids until the youngest is old enough to go to school full time. During my free time I am working on the re-write version of a fiction book that I started 2 years ago and hope to get published some day.

Since northern New Hampshire has always been my all-time favorite place to visit, I was wondering what types of large houses are for rent in that area. Not looking for a palace, as funds in my household are budgeted strictly right down to the last penny! (with 8 kids, it has to be this way!! LOL!!!) A large farmhouse in the middle of nowwhere would suffice, as that's what we are living in now. But anything that's clean, safe and reasonably close to where husband could work would be just fine.

If anyone has any information on where me and my family could move to where we'd be comfortable, please let me know.

Also, where would be the best place for my husband to look for a job? I am very familiar with most of New Hampshire, but not of the prisons or jails in that state.

Thank you!

Search on threads about Berlin - they're putting in a brand new facility there. And Concord has one, you could live in some of the areas outside Concord and he can commute in.

Berlin NH just built a new state prison, and is now building a new federal prison. Housing is super cheap around there, and it's possible the new women's prison will also be built in Berlin. Good luck

As a mom of four, I just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you have a big family! It's a wonderful calling and such a blessing. My youngest is 9 weeks old, so our babies are similar in age.

Anyway, as for jobs, you could also try Ossipee, NH. They have the Carroll County Courthouse and the Carroll County Correctional Facility up there. Ossipee isn't a bad place as far as rental prices go either. Ossipee has a much smaller hometown feel than either Berlin or Concord. So, it depends if your looking more for a city or a town.

Good luck!

If northern NH is your all-time favorite place to visit, then I agree you should check out the facility in Berlin. Berlin is a large old mill town, so I personally wouldn't describe it as "quaint." IMHO it's got more of a blue collar feel to it. But the around Berlin is rural, so you should be able to find a place to rent that's not too inexpensive. I used to travel down 13 Mile Woods sometimes on my way to school. It's a really beautiful area, but it can be a pain to commute in the winter. And it's easy to feel isolated if you're really out in the boonies. Bethel, ME, is just over the border too, if you wanted to stay in Maine.

Sorry, now I'm on a roll!
