If natural beauty is important, I just took only my third drive in my life through Vermont today. Probably the prettiest state I have ever seen, and I have been through more than 2/3rds of them.

Another reason to look at Burlington. With a population of 40K, it's an actual city but it still has a walkable downtown with shops and restaurants, and the views of the lake, Adirondacks, and Green Mtns are second to none. If they want to see a bigger city, Montreal is within reasonable driving distance. And it's both liberal and gay-friendly. It meets the OP's stated requirements better than a lot of the other places being suggested here, along with a decent size airport and a major medical center.

Burlington Vermont is nice.

Even where I am in I travel to Quebec Canada and do some shopping. USD goes further in Canada because of exchange rate.
Can't go now because of COVID - but do go other times. Even do grocery shopping in Canada. They have some neat stuff not found in USA.

The Champlain Valley is beautiful with lots of picture perfect farms, Lake Champlain is fine for sailing and other recreation, it's gorgeous with the Adirondacks rising dramatically on the western shore, and then just to the east you have the Green Mountains with hiking, skiing and trout fishing opportunities.

Burlington has a lot going on, they have a good university, medical school and hospital. It's not cheap - compared to other northern locations, but the price reflects demand, and one can always live in a smaller town nearby to save some cash. The only things to bear in mind is that the taxes are fairly high in the region and it's also quite liberal, of course the OP expressed a desire for liberal attitudes.

Yes! And I'll give another recommendation for Burlington. I was there for a few days once. Just beautiful. Also Woodstock I loved.

I'm not gay, so I'm not really clued in to that, but I'd suggest the OP probably avoid NH, except for Portsmouth maybe. Also, has OP considered Northampton Mass? (or that general area)--it's beautiful out there also. If they're open to Maine, Portland is a great city, & one of the best restaurant (& bars) cities I've ever been too. Certainly liberal I think.

Personally, I'm in an incredibly boring town on the NH Seacoast, & I think a gay couple living around here....might not be a great idea for them (?)

One other consideration, unfortunately, is that a lot of shops and restaurants in some of the smaller towns mentioned here are either teetering or have gone under due to the pandemic and its economic fallout. Their downtowns may not look the same in a year as they do now.

I think there are a lot of libertarians in NH that do not think its their business if someone is gay or not. They could care less. It's none of their business. Live and let live.

I do think there are more gay folks in VT likely though. Good suggestions of Hanover/White River, Woodstock, Brattleboro, Burlington. I think Montpelier is very, very good too for far left wing people and LGBT. Montpelier very walkable with a lot of amenities, great restaurants, etc.... for its size and cheaper then Burlington.

I think VT is super pretty state too. In some ways the prettiest in New England pound for pound, as every inch of that state has mountains and views (where a big part of NH, ME, MA, CT, RI are flat)! And there is very little ugly sprawl and no highway billboards in VT. 89 is a stunning view highway all the way from the border at White River Jct to Canada.

The state is just too far left for me personally (not enough political balance IMO, too into socialism and big govt...some liberals are good, but not when 90% of the population is). But I think its a terrific place liberals and I respect the state and what they do.

I'm thinking more along the lines of the seacoast and Portsmouth NH.
Lively and walkable downtown along water. Prescott Park, botanical garden
lots of great restaurants, Strawbery Bank, Music Theater.
Go to YouTube and look for Portsmouth NH Halloween parade. THAT'S the essence
of the locals when the summer tourists are gone.
It also has nearby Odiorne Point ..a pay-to-park park and walking trails along the
ocean and free Urban Forestry Ctr that overlooks Sagamore Creek.
Grab your binocs and watch the great blue herons and bald eagles.
Very liberal and pricey.

I'm looking for the direct opposite of op. Think the complete opposite of my current location: nyc. I want no neighbors, if there are people around me I want conservatives, lots of guns, mountains, streams, wildlife. Any recommendations? Where can I find out more info about your state? I'm looking into everything from tree types, to politics, to outdoor activities, to property taxes. Thanks.

Question What would be the complete opposite of NYC?

Land is expensive on the East Coast, if you truly want no neighbors you might want to consider moving out west where you can get many acres for small money.

As far as having conservatives around you, just watch the election results tomorrow and in November for the town-by-town totals. Here's the 2018 gubernatorial votes to tide you over until then:
