We are relocating to NH from Charlotte NC. We are looking in the Concord and central areas. We like living in town close to shops, markets and restaurants. We are are hoping for an area with a good downtown with parks and activities. Schools are also very important as we have two small kids. Thanks

Yes, if you can afford the property taxes you will like the Concord and Bow areas. From what I have seen, many people are very active and involved in those communities. Concord has a multitude of locally owned businesses and restaurants. The cost of living is higher than Charlotte, NC.
I think Concord itself sounds like what you're looking for. Meredith is another good recommendation, but it's much smaller than Concord, so I guess it depends on what size town you want. I can't speak for Concord, but Meredith's school district has a good reputation.
We have been searching for a home with some of the criteria that you have for location, and we are closing on a house in Contoocook this month. Hopkinton schools have an excellent reputation and Contoocook Village has a nice family atmosphere with excellent community facilities. The village is small, but there are several restaurants and shops, including a grocery store and a pharmacy. Parts of the village are a little gritty, but you will get that anywhere in New Hampshire, unless you live in a historic district, which is essentially a museum. Access to I89 is excellent and it is about a 10 minute drive to Concord, but you don't have that feel of suburbia that you do in other communities. Taxes in Hopkinton/Contoocook are a little on the high side, but you get what you pay for.
I should note that I have lived in New Hampshire for the last ten years and I have given this move a lot of thought. I live in Washington, NH right now, which is a wonderful community, but the commute to my new job is just too far. Also, while I like the elementary school in Washington, I am less keen on the thought of my oldest son attending school in Hillsborough in a few years.
