The school year is winding down. The Senior Prom was last Saturday night (beautiful warm weather... perfect!!) Tonight was bittersweet... the Awards Banquet for the Londonderry High School's music program. I've spent the last few years being a "band groupie" (aka FOM=Friends of Music) and this was the last "band event" until my youngest becomes a Marching Lancer (it's going to be a long 14 months till the 1st summer practice in July 2010!)
I wanted to share some video of our Lancer Marching Band, and would love to see and hear what other folks can share about THEIR town's high school.
Sportsmanship isn't a word that usually comes to mind when speaking about a HS marching band, but these kids constantly amaze me. Following a "Mack Plaque" football game, arch-rivals Londonderry and Pinkerton's percussion section had an unplanned "Drum War". Funny to see that there were very few spectators at the beginning, in comparison to the end. And speaking of the end, what makes this video for me is the camaraderie that the two groups showed to each other. True class from both schools!
One of my favorite memories was the Salem Band Show in 2007, where the skies opened up while the kids were lining up to take the field. And these kids performed with incredible energy and played through the pouring rain... (we watchers were SOAKED!!) They were saying that the water bouncing off the drums was like something from Blue Man Group:
As much as I love their music, one of my favorite things to see is this band taking the field (or ice rink, as the case may be) then exiting when they are through playing their show. No other HS band that I know can fill a field like these kids (350+ band & color guard members ON ICE ):
Here's this years field show. Nearly all the football games were rained out, so the kids only got to play/practice 2 or 3x before the Salem Band Show. Of course were still awesome
Val, they are incredible!! No wonder you have the band 'bug'!
Best wishes to your Lancer, and all the other Lancers moving on from HS, and to your youngest getting started.
I have one child in band in Hollis, and *love* the band program here, although despite the numerous bands within the H-B district, we do not have a marching band. You are very fortunate and obviously have some incredible instructors with highly talented musicians! Wonderful!!
That is so great, Val!!! I never really thought much of marching band stuff, until I got involved with it more in the early/mid 90's when my brother in law was in the Westbrook Maine marching band. We used to attend all the New England band competitions, etc...and I was always so impressed by those high school marching bands....awesome!! They went to the Rose Bowl, etc.....very much reminds me of Londonderry! It is a pretty awesome thing to watch.....it is nice to have such great memories!!! Have fun with graduation, etc!
