NH gov looks at taxes on mortgage refinancing - Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/news/local/new_hampshire/articles/2009/05/31/nh_gov_looks_at_taxes_on_mortgage_refinancing/?rss_id=Boston.com+--+Latest+news - broken link)

Would this cut significantly into savings from refinancing? In which case, why bother refinancing if it's a wash, or close to it?

This would reduce refinancing as it would add a cost to the homeowner. I just refinanced and got a no points no closing costs loan. This would have added a few thousand to my cost.

It was in the newspaper yesterday:
UnionLeader.com - New Hampshire news, business and sports - State House Dome: Lynch eyes new tax on refinancing - Sunday, May. 31, 2009

If Lynch does go through with this he can expect to be defeated in 2010. 17.5% budget increase, civil unions/gay marriage, toll increases, refinancing tax.... How can he be on the wrong side of so many issues...

He's on the right side on gay marriage but as for the rest of it, one word:

Democrat.

I don't recall Lynch running on a platform that included civil unions or gay marriage..... You'd think that he would have included that in his speeches and campaign flyers in 2004, 2006, 2008....

Ahem... Lynch can only sign it if it is sent to his desk, no?

Assuming all the republicans are against it, only 5 dems in the senate will need convincing this a bad idea. Now ask yerself if any of that refinancing is coming from blue districts...

Seamus, you'll need to discuss that with him. I voted for his opponent. But I'm glad he's going to sign the gay marriage bill. It's the right thing to do.

If this goes through, is it a one time payment you make when you do your taxes the following year? Still, I agree with Brave Stranger. Talk about the worst possible time to put out a refinance tax!

This is rather outrageous. It's as if the people in these positions actually try to sit around thinking of the most dimwit thing they can do and then try to sell it as the greatest idea ever. There's not a revenue problem, there's a spending problem. That should be the political motto of the New Hampshire resident as we approach the next election. These politicians should be likened to irresponsible teenagers who don't know how to budget their allowance. Shame is sometimes a valuable tool in helping to teach mature behavior. Either that, or find a new set of "leaders" and help elect them into office.
