Odd thing is I am the one that complains about the tourist stopping in the middle of the road to take pictures, and here I am doing the same thing. Just pulled of to the side instead.Figure he is about 1 year old give or take a bit.If anyone knows how to put the pictures in the thread without having to click on them could you PM me please, with directions. Thank you.

roerinaci - How true! Definitely doesn't look like "Bullwinkle"

nhyrnut - Great pictures - I wish I'd had my camera in hand when we had the two in the yard! When we first moved up here, someone told me if you see a moose crossing the road, to stop and back up - if you keep advancing, the moose had been know to sorta climb up the car - have you ever heard of that? I'm not sure if they were pulling my leg (like the bears that "hoot" story), or if that was really good advice. I've never tried to upload any pics on this site - is there an "embed" feature?

I have never heard of A moose climbing a car, on the road Myself. They are however Very long legged so it would be possible. I have serious doubts though. I have seen a car that the moose stomped it's front hooves into the hood. ( But that guy honked his horn at it.) If you hit one it will go through your windshield, as the legs are so long, the body just flips onto the hood and into the windshield. I can tell you That during matting season while they are in heat, Don't honk your horns at them (AS this is true, as odd as it sounds) But they will charge your car /truck. See they think it is a matting call Or a challenge from another bull moose. There are certain Vehicles that the horn actually sounds similar enough to them that they really charge the vehicle. Don't know what ones by name, but your better off just not honking your horn. Moose really are dumb animals. Also when driving at night if you come across one in the road and it just walks in front of you, Turn off your headlights The moose can't see with your headlights on it. This goes for deer as well. ( Just make sure to leave your parking lights on, so other cars can see you) But if you do this they will go off into the woods.

nhyrnut - Deer I am very familiar with - Like roerinaci, living in Dutchess County in NY they are all over the place. Hubby LOVED hunting season there

As roerinaci said, thanks for the tip on the horn and the headlights with the moose! I never would have thought a horn would "trigger" them....but I rarely use my horn, so I probably wouldn't use it for a moose, anyway The headlight tip was a good one as well - thank you!

I hit one on Whitefield road where the old drive-in theatre use to be back in 03. Yes, they do go into the windshield. I had a little Ford Escort at the time. Luckily though, I wasn't going too fast. The moose didn't break through my windshield and landed on my lap or taken off my head. Instead, it rolled back off my hood, got up, then fell down, then got back up and took off. Watch out for them; their out, now. I've seen a lot of them on 93, as well, and they'll walk right out in front of your car when you least expect it, which could be fatal being such a big animal. They blend into a wet rainy night and become impossible to see until it’s too late.

Jer

Jer - My stepson hit one/got hit by one (?) in 2000 or 2001 on 302 - he was driving a little Saturn. Luckily, he didn't get hurt, but the car did! Thank goodness you were okay, too! I had a Ford Escort before my current car...Amazing how reslient the Moose are!

nhyrnut - those are wonderful shots! He's so cute. He looks like the young moose that visits our street occasionally (in Merrimack, would you believe!) While our area is pretty developed, the lots are big and there is still quite a bit of forest there. We're in a lake community, so the moose and deer travel to the lake for water. We also get wild turkeys, and all the colorful birds one could hope to watch! It's almost "as good as" the north country.

As for backing up if you see a moose in the road, that is indeed the right thing to do, and verly slowly. Otherwise, the moose will think you are challenging him, and it's not good to make him think that.

awwwww! how cute. Only times I've encountered moose has been in Norway and in Sweden. The first time in Norway, we were driving along a mt road in the early morning and were stopped by an old farmer standing out in the middle or the road, smoking a pipe, and he started talking to us and pointing up towards his house - for a good 5 minutes or more. We had not one clue what on earth he was saying, but we smiled and nodded and he kept on going (sometimes I wonder just what he WAS saying!). As we very slowly moved on, we say 3 doe moose on the other side of his house that had been grazing. Of course my camera didn't want to work well and then they ambled back into the woods.

In Sweden, we'd been told there were moose around that farm although they were shy and no one had ever gotten a photo of them. We, of course, were hoping to see them. One evening coming back there were a couple teenagers just sitting there by the side of the road waiting for us. We slowly came up and they looked at us and stood up and walked back into the woods. Nice of them to welcome us to the farm. Didn't get a photo either.

Haven't yet seen any in NH.
