Hello,

My husband and I live in a nice sub 40outside of Detroit. We are considering an possible offer to move to the cherry hill, NJ area. From what I have been reading in this forum about taxes and cost of living it is concerning. After reviewing info related to Cherry Hill being #47 of the best places to live in America and Mooorestown I was hopeful that this may be a really good move for us. We are not oringinally from the Detroit area so I am looking for a place that we can stay and with a good community and safe place to live. I also like the all that there is to do in with Philly being so close. Can anyone tell me more about these areas and their honest opinion of a move from MI to NJ? I appeciate it!

There's lots to do, schools in NJ overall are very good, crime in that area is low (except for Camden - stay away from Camden!), and you are also just a couple hours from NYC as well as Philly, Atlantic City is maybe 40 minutes away, Jersey Shore an hour away. And the Cherry Hill area is not overly expensive as far as the rest of New Jersey goes. I can't tell you if it's right for you, but I can't think of any reasons why you shouldn't at least consider it. Come out to visit!

Default What's the best address Cherry Hill or MOorestown?

Can anyone describe the difference between Cherry Hill and Moorestown, NJ?
Or what is the address to be in that general area if you were looking for "The Place to live". Just trying to get ideas from the locals and what your opinions are! Thanks again for your help!!!

Both are very nice towns, lots of conveniences, good schools. My personal preference would be Moorestown - just has more charm I think. Some absolutely gorgeous countryside and homes. Cherry Hill is very nice, maybe more developed. Still some wide open spaces in Moorestown. I can see why it was voted #1 place to live, it is gorgeous there.

I thought I read that Moorestown was a "dry" town? Is that true? I love a historic town if that's what it is like. I would potentially look at building a house do you know any good new communities in Moorestown? Thanks so much, I am excited to visit sometime soon. Your comments made me feel much better after I read some of the others about NJ. Thanks!

We are looking at cherry hill too. Moorestown is a little to expensive right now for us but we might think about it in a few years. Also Haddonfiled is very nice, great schools and a nice towny feel.

If you like Moorestown, you also might want to check out Haddonfield. The towns are so similiar that often people will look in both communities at the same time and sometimes move between the two as their needs change. Also a beautiful historic "walking" town with Quaker roots just south of Cherry Hill. Slightly smaller in population, dry, with the same style of old victorian and georgian houses. The main difference is that Haddonfield is not surrounded by lots of open space like Moorestown so there are no housing developments and new houses are harder to come by. Years ago the borough set aside what remained of its open space for recreation and a large nature reserve. On the other hand Haddonfield doesn't have the growth issues the residents of Moorestown are discussing these days. The school districts are equal in test scores and both often lead the south NJ area. Because Moorestown HS is larger than Haddonfield HS (approx. 1250 vs 750) you'll probably find a greater variety of classes and activities there, but both are targeted at a high quality college prep program . The other main difference between the two towns is that the PATCO Highspeed Line has a stop along Kings Highway (the main street) in Haddonfield which will put you in Center City Philadelphia in 20 min. Probably because of this and the lack of new developments, the real estate values are slightly higher and at times buying can be competitive. Now would be a good time to look in both areas.

I'm from Detroit proper, living in New Jersey, not far from Cherry Hill. You will have a little culture shock here in Jersey.
Now that the housing market is slowing down, you may be able to get a good deal on a home here. However property taxes are very high. Check into that before you come.
Transportation is crazy! You will learn to pay tolls and the traffic patterns/restrictions throughout the area is very frustrating. There are few freeways.
You'll have to bring your own Vernors.

On the positive side, Philadelphia is only 30 minutes (and $3-toll) away. NYC is an hour (and $7 - $12-tolls) away. The Pocono Mountains are an excellent resort area with skiing, whitewater rafting, and resorts. ($3 to cross the bridge into Pensilvania) The New Jersey Shore is better then Bell Isle, and Atlantic City is better then Detroit's Casinos; but neither are really that good.
Baltimore, Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland and Virgina are all within 3 hours of Cherry Pint/Morristown.
Professional Sports abounds. The Philadelphia sports centers are 30 minutes away. The Meadowlands are an hour away. Madison Square Garden is 90 minutes away.
The Arts are vibrant and easily accessible in Philly, and Manhattan is well within reach.
Winters here are better then Detroit's. There are fewer days below freezing, so the snow doesn't build-up all winter. And they do not use salt like Michigan, so there is far less brine and ice your car.

I think the everyday cost and quality of life is better around Detroit... But the central Jersey area gives you access to many more entertainment and recreational opportunities. But at a monitary cost. I've been here 8 years, I'm looking to move to more affordable economy.

God Luck.

I am originally from Cherry Hill (1970 to 1987). My husband is from Moorestown. We moved to Tabernacle after we got married in 1987. Tabernacle is just east of Cherry Hill. (15 minutes) and Moorestown (15 minutes) We decide to move to Tabernacle because it is not congested and it is a great are to raise our kids (great schools). Tabernacle is more rural with still alot of working farms. We live on a 5 acre parcel and our taxes are currently $6000.00/year. Elementary and Middle School is excellent. They just built a brand new High School in Tabernacle (Seneca High) part of a Regional High School District. This district has one of the best academic and athletic programs in South Jersey (We are always in compettiton with Moorestown for State Championships.) There is still alot of buildable lots in Tabernacle. We are close to Wharton State Forest. We are about 40 minutes to the best beaches - Long BEach Island. We are 40 minutes to Philly.
You would really need to come and visit to see what peaks your interests.
If you would like me to mail you some real estate guides or town newspaper, just let me know. Have been here 17 years and still love it.
