Just had carpet installed in our entire house. Spent $8000. In the basement, I have 4 sliders doors that can't be installed back and 2 standard doors cannot be opened due to the height of the carpet and padding. The local carpet dealer we bought and paid installation for, looked at me and was dancing around the responsibility of who should get these doors shaved/cut and re-install. I can see both side of story, but as a consumer, I hired the expert to make sure I have good flooring and that they will fit in my house with existing infrastructures being comprised. That's part of the measuring process. I just want to know what the industry standards are in regards to this issue. Are we now stuck with an additional handyman cost to get the doors cut and installed or is this the responsibility of the flooring company? Thank you.

Not sure because I've never had that problem, but I doubt they're going to do anything about it. They're not mathematicians... other than number of square feet.

This is your second impolite response to a comment I replied to and now to my post. I am fairly new here and perhaps misreading some of the tone to your response. But your comments are not very helpful. The company's job is to measure and let you know if a carpet will fit you house or not. It is not about being a mathematician but well-versed in your profession or craft. Since I'm not in the flooring business, I relied on them to provide good advice, service, and work. If you can't depend on people that you paid and hired, then why bother going to a "professional?"

I wasn't trying to have a nasty tone. I just don't see them doing anything about about that. I'm not sure I'd want them to do anything to my doors. More things could go wrong.

I didn't think that she was rude. I do think that this post of yours is rude & curt.

It is your responsibility to have the doors cut down. The carpet people installed the carpet and padding that you picked out. This is very common after new carpet. I'll bet if you read the fine print on the contract it will state just that. And no, that is not part of the measuring process. They measure square feet not door clearance heights.

I don't disagree with what Nodpete says above, but I'd just add that as a matter of customer service they should have mentioned the issue to you prior to you accepting their bid. This is just a basic business issue in terms of managing expectations of your customers and making sure they are prepared for the install. That's not to say that this omission is legally actionable (look at your contract, contact an attorney, etc.), but regardless it is bad business.

The sliders, you can probably adjust the rollers at the top to increase the air gap. As for the two standard door, they must not have been installed properly because standard pre-hung door has an air gap that would have accommodate the change in flooring. If we are talking about 1/2", this is an easy fix.

As far has the carpet company being responsible? Nope. Maybe the person who came out for the measurement should have mentioned something but that is your responsibility.
