I'm interested in seeing how much this would cost, and if anyone has any referrals? Thanks!

I did this a number of years ago and it was well worth it. The cost is going to vary upon what brand you choose, door size, hardware options, etc., trim, then the install labor will depend upon the conditions present at the site.

I would estimate between $3K and $6K depending on size/type of french patio door....

Shoot me an IM & I can get you some names. Do not pick a cheap door. Start with an Andersen door and work up.....

I also did this and it looked so much prettier. I never liked those cheesy sliding doors. I got the kind with panes in them.

Going from sliders to French doors is DOWNGRADING! French doors are nice looking but functionally, are not half as practical as sliders. Wait until you try bringing in food that you're grilling on the deck into the house through French doors

I had Phantom Screens installed on my French wood doors which are about 10 years old. My doors are a triple unit, two operating, and the Phantoms work well with them. They are retractable when not needed.

Mine are open when I grill. All I have to do is tap the Phantoms and they open. Much easier than opening a slider.

As far as it being a "downgrade" it seems to me that realtors mention French wood doors as a selling point, but I never see sliders mentioned as such. Come to think if it, my parents tract development home in Massapequa had sliders. Not exactly a high end house, if you know what I mean.

We just installed french doors (4 sets) throughout the back of our home this past October. 2 replaced larged picture windows (outswing), 1 replaced an existing french door (inswing) and stationary panel (Atrium brand) and then we installed a set where a standard double-hung window used to be in our bedroom (outswing).

I have to ask my husband the costs because I really have no idea. We also got a deal on installation b/c our builder/contractor is also our neighbor.

As for screens, you can purchase retractable screens.
