My son is almost 20. He's been working since he was 14 (bus boy). He now makes excellent money as a waiter but wants to move on to "a real job"- as in weekdays only.
He's open to furthering his education but doesn't want to start any program or classes unless he has an objective- a direction toward a career, not just taking random classes.

Question- Is it still possible to get an entry level job and "work your way up" in a company? What local industries/companies would be most likely to have such an opportunity?

Doesn't have to be white collar/office job.......he's open to the trades as well.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

tell him to go to Home depot. Its a well paying job for a 20 year old and if he keeps his nose to the grindstone he may become manager and even more. I have known people who have gone this route and are now doing well.. Really well.. good luck

I would suggest a temp agency-like Kelly. Some agencies even offer computer training -Excel, Word, Access, etc if he does not already have that experience. Doing some temp work could give him different experiences and if he finds something he likes and the employer likes him, it could lead to a permanent position.

Smart boy. Far too many dollars wasted on useless college degrees that don't actually lead to any useful occupation.

I don't have any smart suggestions unfortunately. Temping is a good suggestion, he could get a feel for different types of work to find out what he likes.

When he knows what kind of work he likes, or what industry or field really grabs him or he shows an apptitude for, then he can make a better decision.
