Hi friends,
If we have to choose from Closter house w/ 20K in immediate repair needed Vs house in Emerson in great condition - close in price - what shoudl we prefer in terms of town?

we have not been in NJ long so dont know the people or cultural differencs between the towns.
Both my husband and I are of Indian origins and we do not have kids right now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks in advance.
Natkav..

There is virtually no difference, other than Emerson is more of a Dunkin Donuts crowd and Closter is more Starbucks. Closter is wealthier and has more of an Asian influence while Emerson is predominantly white with better access to train( if commuting this would be a plus. Obviously most people would recommend the wealthier town but you are really splitting hairs. Closter does have a higher Indian population. Either way you're fine. Not sure about the school systems in each if that is a concern for the future you should check out greatschools.com

Pretty much this. Emerson is more Italian/Irish, Closter is more Asian (Korean and Indian) and generic wealthy white. Emerson has the train, but it's a short drive either way. Closter is prettier (somewhat more leafy, slightly older development), but only marginally. I think Closter has better schools just due to the local culture (higher concentration of very educated people), but don't quote me on that.

Emerson is also near a huge cemetery. Don't buy a home near a cemetery.

LOL. I would LOVE to live next door to a cemetery.

The cemetary is completely seperate from the main part of town. The cemetary is on the main road in between westwood and emerson. The town of Emerson doesn't have a cemetary. Plus, the school system was ranked much better than Closter - check out the article in the NJ Monthly magazine. It was ranked right under NVOT Old Tappan. That is a fact. Emerson is a nice small town, friendly people and everyone takes care of their homes(nice front lawn, additions etc..) and virtually has no crime. Everyone in the town watches out for each other and it's a great place to raise a family, hence Emerson is called the "Family Town".

Now Fairlawn that is a town I would definitely stay away from. It's right next to Paterson which IMO is not a good place to live.

By the way, closter, paramus, ridgewood and a number of other towns have cemetaries as well... So, the point is a lot of towns have cemetaries, that doesn't mean your house has to be right next to it. Pick a town with good schools, low crime and nice neighbors, IMO.
