Here is the info requested in the sticky:

Moving from West Jordan, UT
Moving for my job
Working at EWR

Will either buy or rent.
I'd like to keep it under 1000/month if possible but I might be able to go up to 1200
All we need is 1 bedroom and 1 bath; anything above that would be alright, but not necessary.

It's just me, my wife, and a pet snake.
No kids so schools aren't a factor.

The three biggest things I'm looking for are: Safety, affordability, and a short commute to the airport. Also would like nearness to grocery shopping (or Costco/Sam's Club type of establishment)

I don't really care if it's an apartment, condo, duplex, whatever. I don't know if one type is preferable to the other as we've only lived in an apartment before. Is it true that property taxes are staggering? Will I have to pay them only if I purchase the property or do renters have to as well?

Any info would be appreciated.

Under 1000 probably isn't realistic anywhere in NJ. 1200 is tight but you probably can find something. No extra taxes for renters--they are part of your rent. Landlord pays them.

Look at Rahway and Woodbridge for rentals. Both easy commutes to EWR. Lots of apartment buildings and convenient to everything you need.

Welcome to NJ.

I agree with Mightyqueen801, as I usually do, but I want to add Linden as a possibility.
It is a bit closer to EWR than either Rahway or Woodbridge, and there is a BJ's Warehouse Club in Linden. BJ's is not as good as Costco, but it may meet the OP's needs.

In Linden, I would suggest that the OP look at apartments in the Sunnyside section, as other parts of Linden can be...less desirable.

Are you driving to / from work each day, or do you need to be on an NJ Transit line into the Newark Airport train station?

I would probably drive because I don't know for sure if my hours will be when public transit is operating. Unless they run 24/7.

You can check train schedules at New Jersey Transit - Home

I know on my line there is a gap of a few hours in the early a.m. hours.

Rahway and Linden are certainly possibilities, but if you can stretch up to $1200, consider Cranford. I saw 1 BR apartments in Cranford as low as $1150 a month. It's a much nicer town that Rahway or Linden, and I think overall much safer. There are parts of Rahway that I would not feel safe walking alone, especially at night. I think you should choose a town that has a train station (all 3 of these do). You can take NJ transit to Newark and connect to the airport. May be easier and less expensive than driving in the long run.

You can find something in the 1000-1200 range its doable. I just did a search on zillow and saw a bunch of stuff in maplewood, montclair, Bloomfield, etc.

You can drive to EWR from anywhere in Essex co pretty easily or take the train depending on where you are.
