I know these two towns are very similar, but we're trying to decide between the two. Neither my husband nor I need to commute, so that isn't a factor. Here are some questions I thought of, but please feel free to expand:
-Do both of these towns have septic systems only?
-Are there more/less sidewalks in one?
-What about the school systems? I know they go to the same high schools, but what about K-8?
-How are their downtown areas?
Most houses in Franklin Lakes are septic I believe. Don't know about Wyckoff.
Sidewalks might be equal, I wouldn't say either town has a lot of sidewalks. They are both car towns.
School systems are both good, I'd say they are equal.
I think the property taxes per the value of the home are a bit lower in FL than Wyckoff because the houses generally skew to a higher value. Check the household incomes and home values to see what I mean on that. Wyckoff is affluent too, just not as overwhelmingly affluent and it won't have the super super rich people, off the charts.
Wyckoff has more of a downtown than Franklin Lakes, but it's still not a super walkable downtown like Ridgewood. I wouldn't pick one town over the other based on the downtown. It will take you five minutes to drive to Wyckoff's downtown from most of FL anyway.
Wyckoff has a great YMCA. Of course, you can always use the same Y for the same price living in FL too, but just thought I would throw that in there.
Franklin Lakes is more affluent. This can be a good or a bad. I don't know what your budget is.
Personally, I would pick Wyckoff over FL. That is just me though. For househunting, I would look at both and it would probably come down to what home I could get etc.

Really, both towns are equal in the things you mentioned and both are lovely towns, so I would pick the one that has the house you love
Both towns are very similar. My husband grew up on the border of the two towns, and went to Wyckoff schools. Franklin Lakes rec had more programs, and started baseball earlier.
As far as the downtowns, living in one town, you are so close to the other it doesn't matter. I like the Urban Farms Shopping in FL better than the Wyckoff downtown area. 1) lots of parking 2) just about everything you need in one spot. Starbucks, toy store, Marketbasket, Endless Vine (wine store).
wyckoff has a lot more sidewalks and more of a downtown. cheaper houses. wyckoff feels more like a normal NJ town to me.
i have seen houses in the 300k range there. you will just not find a house under half a million in FL i don't think.
