My husband and I live in the city now but are starting our research on where to move to in NJ. Here are things we are looking for:

Good schools
Manageable commute to the city
Small town feel

As far as the house goes, this is where it gets hard - by the time we move our budget for a house will likely be $500K-$550K - important things for the house are 4+ bedroom, finished basement, decent size backyard and a 2 car garage - the hard part is that I really love new construction - something built within the past 15 or so years.

From the research I have done so far it is very hard to find this in many towns as you get closer to the city, because many of the towns are very expensive and I feel like the newer houses I am looking for are $750K+

My friend did recommend one town - Robbinsville - she said its great schools - new houses are in that range - Hamilton train is express and its approx. 65 minutes. What does everyone think of this town for what I am looking for?

Other towns you would recommend or am I setting myself up for a failure of not finding anything?

Have you considered the "first tier" of suburbia? Wherever that begins to point you to?

You can always look into Middlesex County. I tjink you'll have a good time finding that will suit you budget in several towns here. Maybe start with the Brunswicks (East North and South) as well as Monroe and Sayreville.
Good luck with your home search and don't hesitate to ask any questions!

Robbinsville is a great area - especially the Washington Town Center that was just recently built by Sharbell. It has the small town feel that you are looking for and is close to Allentown, NJ if you want an authentic old downtown to visit once in a while. Schools are still new & up & coming as the area is being built up. Only downside will be the commute. 65 minutes will be the absolute minimum + drive time to & from the station, but you won't be the only ones doing it.

Lightbulb Glouster County, Mullica Hill Nj.

This is a small South Jersey community with very good schools and reasonably priced new and used homes.

Very close to shopping and near Center City.

There are many young family's living in the above area.

400k will get you a fine home.

Good Luck

Every town, even close in, will have a couple of newer houses even if most of them are older. It will just take a lot of looking to find them.

Take away the requirement of new construction and you can find exactly what you want in Madison, Chatham, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, etc. Great schools, small town feel, and a reasonable commute to New York.

East Brunswick has great schools, is about an hour from Manhattan on the bus and has a mix of housing from $300K to over $1 million.
