How much do you pay?

I'm thinking of getting a new car, but hate to think how much I will be charged for full coverage. I currently have progressive and only pay $80 a month for minimum coverage on my 1999 Honda civic. I've been driving for 14 years and have a clean record with no violations or accidents.

I know you need full coverage on a new or used car from a dealer. What happens if you pay for the new or used car in cash? Do you still need full coverage since you own it? Can you take the insurance down once you finish the finance payments? Does the kind of car also make a difference?

I'm thinking of Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, or Nissan

WOuld appreciate any info. I find this all confusing.

you only need comprehensive coverage if you don't own your vehicle...it's the bank that requires it, since they own the vehicle until you pay off the loan. but, if you got a new Honda, and got into an accident, and didn't have comprehensive...how would you pay to fix your car?

My insurance on a 2010 Subaru Legacy GT is approx $800 every 6 months. On a 2006 Acura TSX that's paid for, but still worth about $13,000 so I keep comprehensive for now, is $700 every 6 months. I have a $500/deduct on both.

We have full (and a few steps above minimum) coverage on both vehicles. We both have clean driving records and outright own both cars. Our cars are a 2003 Jeep Wrangler and a 2007 Mazda3. Through NJM we pay roughly $1700 a year for both.

yes to $750/yr (it's a TL) and yes to NJM. i believe we are older than you , we've been NJM customers forever, no chargable accidents or points, and the biggie - we live in "rural" Morris County.

yeah. my wife is 29, i'm 28. but we have an 06 TSX and although we pay some slight increase because we're in essex county, i still can't imagine we are "double" the risk of you! haha. i still don't really understand how to tell if my company belongs to the group that means we can get NJM. should i just call NJM and see?

when we moved from hudson county to morris - my husband's insurance went from $2600 down to about $700!

eta - we weren't married then...i believe the $700 figure is after we got married.

from Hoboken to West Orange my insurance went down by approx 10% (slightly less i think). I currently have Liberty for both auto and homeowners. Insurance drives me mad!

I had Liberty for both too when I moved in which I thought offered pretty good pricing. Then, a year later, got a slight increase upon renewal. Went to Geico website, and bam!!! just like that saved ~$300 between the car and house policies for comparable coverages. Geico even reduced the premium for my parents after first 6 months, I was surprised.
