On Monday morning, I will be driving from Mount Laurel, NJ to Long Island, NY (specifically Glen Head). I was wondering what would be the fastest route. I would likely reach the river crossings around 8:30AM or so.
Would taking the NJTPK to the GOETHALS BRIDGE to the Verranzano to the Belt Pkwy to the Cross Island Pkwy make the most sense?
OR would it be better to use the OUTERBRIDGE CROSSING to the Verranzano?
I've pretty much ruled out using any of northern crossings into Manhattan.
Going up I would usually suggest the Outerbridge and the usual way up the West Shore (NY440), SIE (I-278) across the "Guintified Gangplank" (VZB). I almost never go back that way because of the $13 toll westbound on the bridge and most of the time I hate tolls.
Usually I take the Willy on the way back, cross lower manhattan and come out the Holland to the Skyway since all that is toll free westbound.
Usually any delays in SI start across the SIE so it doesn't make too much difference taking the Goethals vs. Outerbridge, Outerbridge gets you off NJ toll roads quicker.
LI is my favorite place NOT to go to, mostly due to traffic, bridges, tolls..
Thanks for the insight. My employer will be reimbursing me for tolls so I'm not particularly concerned about that. How is traffic on the Goethals in the evening CaptainNJ?

going back to nj, the most likely bottleneck is after the verazano bridge between the toll plaza and the end of the bus lane (about 2 miles). other than that, its usually pretty smooth sailing (im coming from brooklyn not long island so you may have issues closer to where you are on LI that i dont know). i prefer the goethels over the outerbridge because i feel the turnpike is safer than 440 if there is some kind of back up.
its a little slower than in the morning, but its not that bad. usually takes me about 1hr in the morning, 1hr 15 in the evening.
One other thing that they did in NY a while ago was if you are on the lower level of the Verazzano going West back towards SI they had the lanes separated after the tolls so you would have to stay on the service road a mile or so. I don't know if they're still doing that or it was in place for some sort of roadwork, but it was that way for a considerable length of time.

i always stay in the top in the left lane. then go to the last lane on the left before the bus lane toll. i believe that you arent stuck going to the service lane if you are in the bottom though.
also, when going on the turnpike you should go in the cars, trucks and buses not the cars only side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
WHY???? for driving outerbridge!!!! I usually just go intercity greyhound to NY then LIRR to glen head as that is faster.
