Investigators review Camden pit bull shooting; 33 shots fired, hitting cars, home, dog | Courier-Post | courierpostonline.com

Quote:
The Camden officers who sprayed bullets across a city neighborhood when they fired multiple rounds at a pit bull Friday have been placed on administrative duty while investigators review the bizarre shooting.

Residents said three officers fired 33 rounds at the 8-month-old pit bull, killing the dog and striking three cars and a home in the process.

Joseph said four officers were standing outside his home in the 3000 block of Lemuel Avenue when the pit bull, Capone, slipped out of his owners' house and began running toward the officers and others down the street.Joseph said one of the officers yelled for the others not to shoot, but that the three others opened fire as the dog approached. Joseph, along with the dog's owner and other residents, said the pit bull was friendly, house trained and not acting aggressively when it ran toward the officers.

This shows what a bunch of pantywaistes the cops have become. They can eat donuts watch porn in their car and write up parking tickets but can't clean up the streets.

Iti s a tragedy, pitbills can be lovely family dogs. That being said, the only one to blame here is the owner. If you are going to own a dog with the reputation (not entirely deserved IMHO) that breed has, you must be hyper-vigilant. The owner should have kept the dog in the house, warned the police that he owned a friendly pitbull, etc.

I own two border collies, a very friendly looking dog breed. One of my dogs was badly abused before I got her from the rescue and is potentially dangerous to strangers. I warn people when we are out not to pet her. I have to be hypervigilant because if anything happened it would be my fault.

Pitbulls as a breed are potentially dangerous even if this one was not. There was no way for the police to know that this dog was friendly once the "charge" (which in this case appeared to be just friendly excitement) started. The owner should have known to anticipate that people would be more fearful of a pitbull than a cockapoo.

Also, its a bit inflammatory to title the thread with the word puppy. An 8 month old dog may not be fully mature but it certainly has more in common with an adult in terms of size than with an actually puppy. Especially AmStaffs, my brothers AmStaff is 60lbs now and she was 50lbs at the 8-9 month mark. Not exactly the 10lb armful that we all picture with the word "puppy" but maybe that was your point?

bad owners but i would definitely call lame on this for the police. you can come up with something better than pumping a dog full of lead if its coming at you. maybe police should have some dog training. also 3 vs 1. CMON.

It's not only about the dog...it's about the cops shooting 33 ROUNDS at a dog, and in the process hitting cars and homes with stray bullets....it could just as easily have been people who were hit with stray bullets...if this happened anywhere but Camden it'd be all over the news.

Good for the cops. They would be in trouble too if they waited too long and the dog mauled someone. And a 8 month old pit dog is no puppy. It can kill.

I think this was sarcasim but it's so true. They would be sued by a lawyer for being negligent for letting a pit bull run past them and they did nothing. Damned if u do and damned if you don't. I've been in this position and 2 shots sufficed.

8 months is certainly a puppy. it may start to look like a full grown dog, it may not. but it's actions will still be puppy like.

but i tend to agree, the reputation, deserved or not, requires owners of such dogs to be extra vigilant. this is a sad story though. but many people are afraid of dogs to beging with.

i'm not so sure the cops wouldn't do the same thing to my 75lb black shephard-looking mix if he ran out of my house towards cops...but it's an over-reaction to shoot a dog before it actually attacks any grown men. if children were around, maybe i could understand at least a bit...but still
