I bought a used car from my friend and transferred the title and did the registration of the car in my name at NJ DMV today. I am a new driver and I got the driver license only a few days back.

Is it possible for me to add my name to the insurance that my friend has for the car?

Regards,
Nick

No, you have to have it yourself if the car is in your name. His insurance company is going to get notification that he no longer owns the car, anyway.

I don't know how you were able to register the car in your own name without proof of insurance in your own name. It's not possible to be added to someone else's policy, other than a spouse. Insurance is a legally considered a "personal contract" between the insured and the carrier, and coverage can't be shared with others beyond what is provided in the policy language.

In NJ if you get caught driving the car without valid insurance you lose your driving privilege, that's what they call it, for a year. Happened to people I know who just forgot to pay the bill. In other words its a serious thing.
